uTorrent seems to think I am running two versions

I have posted about this earler, but can't seem to find a solution, so I thought I'd try a new thread.

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and uTorrent version 3.4.3 (build 40298) [32 bit]

I  would really appreciate someone answering me.  Also, I am not very technical, so a detailed answer would be much appreciated.  A few times I asked a question here and got an answer, but I just didn't understand it.

When I go to download a torrent, quite often (but not always) I get a pop-up that an older version of uTorrent is already running.  There is definitely only one version installed and I am definitely running the latest version.

Things have now become worse.  Whereas earlier, while I got this message and it was annoying, the torrent would download anyway.  Now, when I get this pop-up, it simply closes that torrent and won't download.  I have also noticed that it is more likely to happen with magnet links.

When I posted previously, someone suggested I go to preferences and click on "associate with torrent files".  I tried that, but that option is greyed out.

Also, FWIW (in case it is connected) uTorrent keeps crashing (well, not sure if crashing is the right term - it just seems to close itself, instead of minimising and yes, preferences are definitely set to minimise)

I attempted to attach a screen shot of my preferences, but I just can't get the file small enough to allow me to upload (again, I suspect, because of my lack of expertise)

I will also start another thread on another matter.  I think it is not connected to this problem, so I thought I should start a separate thread, but for all I know it may all be connected, so please read both, thank you.

Someone, please help!  :_(

P.S. Thought I'd send my screen shot this way: https://www.dropbox.com/s/usqx6is8jcivjf1/Capture.JPG?dl=0

It includes the screenshot for the next thread too

Can't make heads or tails out of it? If you going to post screen shot it should be clear and readable and legible.

Sorry, I was attempting to reduce the picture size, and forgot to check the final result to see if it was still readeable.  Uploaded a new version now

You may have installed uTorrent in two different locations at different times.  The magnet link in your Windows Registry is pointing to one of those locations, while you are currently running the version installed in a different location. When the magnet version starts, it sees that other uTorrent is already running.  You get the error.

You can clean this up by editing your registry.  I keep my torrent files on a removable drive, which I've used on rare occasions on work machines.  To remove evidence of this use, I search for the word "torrent" in the machine's registry.  I delete all those references, which in your case, will resolve your problem of the different versions.  Don't worry, uTorrent will restore all the registry settings it needs the next time you start it.  The uTorrent development team did an excellent job of implementing program initialization.  Those guys are the best.

You might also want to search your disk for files with the name "torrent" in them.  That will reveal where any alternate install locations are.  You can then delete the unwanted directories.

Of course, I might be totally wrong and this is not your particular situation.  If not, cleaning your registry won't be harmful.  If it makes you nervous, go to System Restore in you control panel and create a restore point first.  If you flub up when editing your registry, you can always roll back your system using that restore point.

Thank you for your reply.  I am not at home ATM, so will look further when I am, but...  I had the same problem with my old laptop, I recently bought a new laptop with a clean install and it is happening here as well.

I haven't done it on this computer yet, but did search for a second installation on the old laptop, couldn't find any
