Vista and 1.7 build 2999 - Program hangs on close

Is anyone else having the problem with utorrent not closing in Vista? It only seems to happen if you have the "always perform this check" box ticked. When I try to close it. the program remains on the screen without response and you can't kill it with Task Manager. If I untick the box, it closes with no problems.

It seems someone else was having this same problem, but your investigation seems to make more sense than the "solution" in that thread (setting bt.graceful_shutdown to true). Let's see what the devs say about this.

Also, by not being able to close it via task manager do you mean it really doesn't close if you force end it from the processes list? If so, that could be an indicator of a more serious problem.

Hm. Get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, File > Save, then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here.

Turning bt.graceful_shutdown will only make shutdown slower, if anything.

Exactly, that's why we were so surprised the person said it solved the problem.

Yes, trying to end the process via Task Manager doesn't do anything at all and utorrent remains on the screen as "not responding". Straight after trying to close it, Vista recognises it as not working and asks if I want to close the program or wait. Choosing either option does not do anything either. I will get the info from sysinternals and post it today.

Similar to e160877 -- I too have had the problem: "When I try to close it. the program remains on the screen without response and you can't kill it with Task Manager." My success with turning off the prompt on exit "always perform this check" box ticked has been erratic. I cannot say one way or the other. uTorrent seems to exit as expected properly if I had done little if any work with it (that is open and immediately shut it down). But the more uploading/downloading I have done -- the more likely uTorrent seems to hang on exiting. I'm using Vista. Also beta 1.7 build 2999. AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Dual Core Processor. I have never used Get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com -- but am willing to attempt it. Best Wishes, Robert

Interesting theory which could have merit. I downloaded process explorer, ready to submit my findings and wouldn't you know it, now I can't get utorrent to hang at all! But......I wouldn't discount your theory, as I haven't been downloading much lately, and there is only a few things queued up to go. If/when it hangs again, I'll post the results.

Hi. A few reboots of my computer ago, I installed the new uTorrent 1.7 (build 3265). I had hoped this would clear up the problem that I have been having: "When I try to close it. the program remains on the screen without response and you can't kill it with Task Manager."

I did change the bt.graceful_shutdown setting back to the default of False, as this setting when *True did not seem to make any improvement when I was using earlier build 2999.

With some apologies, I will paste below the results of running Process Explorer after uTorrent stopped responding. I had stopped all my torrents from uploading, and downloading, and then right clicked the utorrent in my Tray (near the clock on the task bar) requesting Exit. Shortly thereafter utorrent stopped responding.

No, it is currently sitting on my screen with (not responding), and there's no way to get rid of it.

I had a same problem. Killing task and task tree doesn't help (even manually: cmd -> taskkill /t /im utorrent.exe). For some reason switched firewall from Zone Alarm to Comodo and... yes, that's it. Now uTorrent works perfectly fine. Hope this will help someone.
