uTorrent - too much downloaded after force recheck

uTorrent directories on an external drive

THE BACKGROUND

I have all uTorrent’s directories on an external disc. I started doing that when there were the directory problems in uTorrent and my internal hard disc was getting full. Since then I’ve decided I need it anyway, to cut down wear on my internal disc and speed it up for other things.

I restarted my laptop with the external disc offline. uTorrent couldn’t find files. The downloads library in uTorrent was empty and the completed library was all with red marks. No problem, I thought. I quit uTorrent, reconnected the external disc, relaunched uTorrent and forced a recheck on everything. uTorrent rechecked the torrents in its completed library first, then the downloading ones. All looked well.

The next morning, I find there are problems under the surface. Many problems are to do with completed files that uTorrent is downloading a second time.

I also have problems to do with data, both complete and incomplete, that is supposed to have files skipped but I’m not going into that here as I am a bit confused about what is going on there.

COMPLETED DATA THAT IS BEING DOWNLOADED A SECOND TIME.

In the Finder many downloads appear with the same name and same size in both the complete and incomplete directories. That is to say, each download appears to be duplicated in the complete and incomplete directories. Details are (Finder size, size in uTorrent’s downloading library, % complete in uTorrent):

- In the Finder two other torrents appear in only the complete directory. Their torrent files are still in the incomplete torrents directory. Details are:

Finder size: 4.7 GB

size in uTorrent’s downloading library: 4.3 GB

% complete in uTorrent: 1

- In the Finder one other torrent appears with the same name and the same size in both the complete and incomplete directories. Unlike the others above, in uTorrent it appears only in the complete library.

PROBLEMS WITH INCOMPLETE DOWNLOADS.

These have odd details. In the Finder they appear just in the incomplete directory. Their details are (Finder size, size in uTorrent’s downloading library, % complete in uTorrent):

P.S. I see someone had something vaguely like this with a windows version of uTorrent at:

but they didn't know what caused their problem.

Also, the downloaded data that is duplicated in the complete directory doesn't work.
