Issues with the µTorrent free app - Please help

I see that the forum here is quite dead, but in the hopes that I grab a dev or moderator's attention, I will still post my query here.

 

I use µtorrent client for my downloads. There are a few issues I am facing when the app is running:

 

1. The torrent begins to download fine, but somewhere down the line the speed drops from kbps to bps or stops downloading altogether. I only download on WiFi and my average download speed is 400kbps. The only was I can work around this is to restart the app.

 

2. My phone begins to act real sluggish, and sometimes even inoperable. This is only when the client is running in the background.

Model: Canvas Turbo A250

Android version: 4.2.1 Jelly Bean

Chipset: Mediatek MT6589T

Processor: Quad Core 1.5 GHz Cortex A7

RAM: 2 GB

Storage: 1 GB for apps, 12 GB for user storage, No expansion slot

 

I want to continue to use µtorrent, as other alternatives add speed limiters and such. Please suggest a fix. Also, I will be glad to provide any additional information, should you need it.
