Speed problem with uTorrent: Maybe this can help

I'm a novice/intermidiate computer user. After ***exhaustive*** research, I've gotten my downnload speed to 500K+... up from 50K.

I use Optimum Online in NY. Anyone using cablemodem should try the following...

#1... download and apply the TCPIP fix noted in several other fixes. Sorry, I don't have the link handy. When you use it, set max_half_open to 80.

#2... open utorrent. Go to Preferences. Go to Connections. There, UNCHECK randomize port. UNCHECK UPNP mapping. CHECK add utorrent to windows firewall exception. At 'Port used for incoming connections': use a value between 42000 and 45000. REMEMBER THIS NUMBER!!!!

Do _not_ use randomize port. Your firewall settings will not know the program has changed the listening port. Use a single port number. DO NOT RANDOMIZE!!!!

#2AA.... set your firewall and router info to forward the port above! There are hundreds of help topics out there to help with this. I am no expert, and I managed to forward mine, both in my firewall program (ZoneAlarm), and my router (Zyxel HSW-100). It's not so hard. Good Luck!

#3... back to uTorrent: Preferences screen; sub menu Connections; Bandwidth limiting: set max upload rate to 120. Set max download rate to 550. CHECK alternate upload rate and set for 200.

#4... goto Bittorent submenu. Set Global max connections to 600. Set Max number connections per torrent to 200. Set max number upload slots per torrent to 15. UNCHECK use additional upload slots. CHECK enable DHT networks. CHECK enable DHT for new torrents. CHECK enable peer exchange. UNCHECK ask tracker for scrape. ENABLE protocol encryption. CHECK allow incoming legacy.

#5... goto Advanced menu. Left click once net.max_halfopen. In the 'value' field below, type 70 and ENTER. Then click 'APPLY'.

#6... Retstart your computer. You should be good to go.

#7.... alittle more help. Downloading anything relies on its availablity. Number of peers (seeders and leeches). Copy the following to your clipboard.....

....and leave the spaces!!!!!!!

This is alittle pre-historic, so bear with me. Save this info somewhere. I have deleted the 'search engines' in 'User Interface' under Advanced settings and copied this list there.

Now.... each time you start a download, copy this list to your clipboard. Then... right click your actual download. Go to the bottom and click 'properties'. The top box will list trackers. Scroll to the bottom. Keeping a space between the last listing, right click and hit 'paste'. This will copy that whole list of trackers to your download. BAM! Suddenly, you find more people with the file. More peers, more download.

Hope this all helps. Like i said, I'm no expert, but I've gotten my download speeds up 500%. Hope it helps.

Oh yes... like many other topics suggest, play with the upload/download rates. Although many people have said upload doesn't effect download rates, in toying with mine own, I've found the less you upload, the less you download. I suggested 120/up and 550/down because i seem to get the best results on my end. If I try 600/down, my down/rate drops suddenly to under 300. Fine. Setting it at 550 and I get 500-550/down. Better than 50k down. Good luck!

Make sure you're actually uploading as fast as you set it to. If not, you really should reduce your max upload speed.

Also, having more than 30 connections per torrent only helps your download speed IF you are capable of downloading 100+ KB/sec per torrent. Having more than 100 connections per torrent is almost always pointless. You cannot upload fast enough back to them to even get that many peer's attention at once, so they are very unlikely to give anything back to you.

Setting net.max_halfopen higher than the default of 8 can cause problems even if TCPIP.sys is patched. If you're unfirewalled, you should already be getting alot of connections from people trying to connect to you.

I'm uploading fine at 120K max. Hitting it fine.

In regards to the TCPIP patch and net.max_halfopen, I have to disagree. That was definitely one of the problems I was having with speed until I did patch it and raise it to 70.

Also, you commented about setting the max connections per torrent to 30, rather than 100. I tried this, and found my download speeds slowing. I think the problem is that people on the other end uploading to you... even if they are set to upload 500K... that 500K is global, to all people connected. Not just your torrent. Most often, I rarely find anyone uploading more than 5 - 10K to me. Thus, having more connections allows more download to you. 30 people at an average of 5k is only 150K. 100 people at 5k is 500K.

And I feel _BAD_ for anyone using a torrent program, heck, using the Internet period, without a firewall. Bad move.

No, there is a difference between NO firewall and µTorrent not being blocked by your firewall.

I mean µTorrent not being blocked by your firewall.

It should be allowing incoming connections on the 1 port µTorrent allows, or you're not connecting to probably 50-80% of everyone on the torrent.
