Zzlaap
xmod,Are u downloading software? I think that nortons virus checker is using most of the CPU. I have this phenomena when I'm down loading software or files that are compressed with winrar. During movie downloading I don't have a high CPU usage. Also when I shut down virus checker from norton the CPU usage becomes low.
Sun Guru
Same problem here...When I start the torrents, the System process uses almost all of my CPU...
Halvliter
I've got the same problem as threadstarter, running with AMD 1800+, 1.5 GB RAM on Windows XP Pro.I'm using Avast antivirus and Kerio Personal Firewall, and the spikes stop everything (100% CPU usage). Sun Guru
I think that there may be a software incompatability using Avast anti virus...You should check the FAQ!
Ultima
If you are using any piece of incompatible software listed in the FAQ, regardless of whether you experience the symptoms, do list them. Norton is one such application -- have you tried uninstalling it to be 99% sure it's not causing issues? I say 99% because Norton products are notorious for having uninstall problems ;oAdditionally, check to make sure your IDE controllers' current transfer mode is NOT PIO. Sun Guru
Ultima, could you explain to me what you mean with "Additionally, check to make sure your IDE controllers' current transfer mode is NOT PIO."
Ultima
I already explained in the other thread that you need to check the IDE controllers' properties via devmgmt.msc.
Sun Guru
Ok..let me stay in this thread. I have opened that command and Clicked in IDE controllers. There are three controllers there and I have clicked on all of them and looked at their properties. But I really do not know where to look in order to find out whether they are in PIO or not...And what is PIO?...EDIT: forget my stupid questions..I have gone on the internet and found out what PIO is etc...And no...Mine is not on PIO mode. It's in DMA mode 5...
Ultima
Get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, File > Save, then copy and paste the process list in the .txt file that you save from there.

Ultima
What's with all these "state-of-the-art" security softwares requiring such massive amounts of processes to run?At this point, the only processes I can really say I'm suspicious about are the Panda processes... can you try uninstalling Panda (temporarily) and testing µTorrent to see if you experience the same behavior?
Sun Guru
Hell...that's panda. But!! I found the culprit...it was panda all along. While running Utorrent I went to the properties of the System Process using Process Explorer, and then I found that the process called netfltdi.sys which is a Panda TDI filter is the one that was using all the memory. There are actually about 15 of the same processes running. It is usually the first 6 to 7 netfltdi.sys processes that are using the tons of memory. A couple of days ago I have already uninstalled and installed the AV back. But I really don't know why this is happening now, because this was never the case....Sigh...Can I stay on this site while I know that the problem isn't utorrent but my AV panda?...I'd be really thankfull if you guys could help me with this too... Switeck
Of course you can stay here. You're not breaking any rules, and you've just helped confirm one of the mysteries as to why many people get huge CPU spikes seemingly while running µTorrent....But you might want to also inform the makers of Panda AV that they have a SERIOUS bug in their product!
