Will XP reinstall ruin data?

I have to do an OS reinstall. uTorrent will survive in the program file, but when I run uTorrent afterward will the in-progress data be lost?

If you mean what most people mean by "reinstall", then yes. If you do a repair of the existing windows installation (ALSO an option when you insert and boot from the windows install disk, select "R" the repair option) no.

I saw that the download file has partially completed uTorrent files. If the settings are saved, can these files be salvaged?

The in-progress data is stored in resume.dat. As long as you see resume.dat in your %APPDATA% folder, yes

OH, don't forget to backup the data on the partition... or at least to not format that one.

I did the reinstall. The app data is there and so is the resume.dat file. Of course when I run uTorrent none of the downloads appear. The partial file are still in Downloads, but an error box reports a .ddl missing when I click on them.

Uhm, your resume.dat is blank. You need a backup

Or use the migration guide from http://utorrent.com/guides.php to re-add the torrent and repath to your existing data.
