Which antivirus??

Well, no best exists, but you can get something good and avoid the bad. Avoid Norton at all costs (if the computer came with it (probably in trial form or something), use this tool http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 ). Avast, AVG, and Avira are all free, I wouldn't install the web and e-mail components though, those might be problematic (have been in the past). I use Avira, with a minor tweak to keep it from advertising on every update.

Best thing would be knowledge on what not to touch, AV wont catch everything.
