why does utorrent choke the internet connection on our home network?

i use .9.2 version.

it seems to work ok, but when on, it dominates the internet connection, so all other users on the network including me, can't use safari,

or at least slows it down to a crawl.

as soon as i turn utorrent off, the speeds on the machines start flying as normal.

any suggestions please?

Make less connections and limit your upload and download speeds.

thanks, that seemed to free up something for the other users in the network..

on another thing,

the port indicator on the lower right corner of the user window is always closed (red).

again, downloads and uploads seem to be going on ok,

but is there something i can do or need to do to keep the port open?
