Utorrent on SSD?

All uses shortens it life span.

A ssd has cells. Each cell can be written to only X times before it dies.

Downloading to it (via torrents) will be many small writes and can be

considered more bad than other uses.

However, new SSD are far better than the old generations

and even with 20 GB writes a day, they still last 5 years.

So it might be a non issue for you.

I used for my old 60 GB vertex2

for download and it has not died yet. been 2 years now.

That said, there is absolutely no benefit using the SSD.:)

No, only erase/write cycles will reduce the cell's ability to hold charge.

True the controller chips now have a "wear flattening" algorithm coded into them.

they still last 5 years.

When used as W.O.R.M. (Write Once Read Many) storage, their life is close to infinite, barring any physical damage of course.

True. But if you have the SSD as system disk, anything you do will shorten its life since the OS write to it during any task a user might perform. ( that was what I meant, anyway)

Well, at least for the windows platform. :)

One thing I wonder. Since uTorrent allocate the file first then write to it, it seems like mem mapped file.

If I tweak the cache settings (turn off dont write at once),

I wonder how many erase/writes it saves and in the bitter end how much time it would give.

Anyway, if you read a test like

http://us.hardware.info/reviews/4178/10/hardwareinfo-tests-lifespan-of-samsung-ssd-840-250gb-tlc-ssd-updated-with-final-conclusion-final-update-20-6-2013

(TLC, not MLC )

Its clear that unless you really download 24/7-365, a ssd will last long.

Even when used for torrent download.

Also at work I have many laptops with SSD. The disk often outlast the laptop anyway.

But ofcause. To be sure. Better to use external drive.
