Utorrent icon, where are you hiding?

Basil

Recommended Posts

I've always kept the box in 'preferences' ticked that places a utorrent icon in the systems tray.

For about the last month the icon doesn't automatically show up. When I open 'preferences' the box requesting a systems tray icon is still ticked. I can get the icon to appear in the systems tray by unticking the box and 'applying' and then reticking the box and 'applying'. The icon then sits happily in the systems tray until I reboot.

And then it's the same all over again.

I'm running Windows 2k.

Anybody got any ideas about what may be wrong please?

Basil.

O.o

Can you exit µTorrent, backup your settings.dat and settings.dat.old files in %appdata%\uTorrent, remove them from %appdata%\uTorrent, then restart µTorrent (reconfiguring everything) to see if the problem persists?

If not, then you might want to post the settings.dat file to some site like savefile.com for someone to look at/analyze. If it does persist, get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, Ctrl+D (to show the lower DLL pane), select the µTorrent process from the list, Ctrl+S (and save the list somewhere you'll find easily -- like the Desktop) , then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here.

Thank you Ultima. I tried removing the settings files but that didn't seem to make any difference. So I went the Process Explorer route you suggested. It's all gobblydegook to me but here it is - see below.

I have made copies of the settings files when I boot and then after I have tweaked them via 'preferences'. I have uploaded these files to Savefile. They can be accessed here: http://savefile.com/projects/808611378

After I do the tweak the icon sits in the systems tray until the next reboot. Utorrent starts automatically on booting and used to put an icon in the systems tray but doesn't now without my tweak.

This is not a big deal, just an irritation, so please don't go to any great trouble.

I am very grateful to you for offering advice and I again I say thank you.

Re-reading that, it appears SSDP is irrelevant. There was a reported fix/workaround for this... and it relates to the XP SSDP service (it triggers at startup and if you login at startup before it finished firing, certain apps did not work correctly when interfacing with the system tray. Injected DLLs are all those dlls you see in the uT process NOT from microsoft corporation. Any one of them when messing with system calls can be to blame.

For ex: "wonderful icon puppeteer"... sounds like it mucks with icons... it could be the problem. You either need to forcibly remove the hook with Process Explorer... close the programs then close and re-start uT... verify they are not loaded, and see if the icon disappears again.

Of note: When it "hides" is the only thing that brings it back a disable and re-enable of the preferences setting? Or does it come back if you lock then unlock the computer, or go to/from screensaver, or hibernate, or standby?? The last two I'm not sure if they're relevant but I do know that certain actions only trigger for login/logout on XP, which is triggered by the lock/welcome screen/hibernate.

Thank you jewel. I removed the 'wonderful' program. It was quite hard to get rid of and I had to delete it in safe mode. Ironically the 'wonderful' program was supposed to have an icon sitting in the systems tray and that too has been missing of late.

Now all is well. When I boot, utorrent puts an icon in the systems tray where it sits happily.

Thank you for your help and advice.

Basil
