What does utorrent in the background?

If I look at the logfile of my virusscanner I see that uTorrent wants to send mail and wants IRC communication. Why is that?

This is a part of my logfile:

I'm guessing that all of those IPs are peers and they probably use 110 (POP3) and 6667-6669 (IRC) to bypass firewalls and throttling at their own end. Try checking the peerlist of one of your torrents for those IPs.
