merlin1
I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my computer. I installed utorrent a week ago and it was working fine until a couple of days ago. First i got disk overload and i changed the cache size and it got rid of that error, but for some reason the cache is not writing on the hard drive and just stays in the cache instead. And everytime i restart utorrent the info is lost and i have to start all over again. What could be the problem i am having and how to fix it? Thanks for any suggestions. AllGamer
first make sure you have "preallocation" enabled in utorrent.then make sure the utorrent DOWNLOAD directory is configured for a HDD with lots of empty space
merlin1
I tried it and it still does not work. Could be that some other program could be blocking utorrent from writing to the disk.
jewelisheaven
What version are you using. The current builds of 1.8 (in development pre-beta) include measures to work-around windows cacheing. Can you try that and see if your problem goes away... what kind of speeds are you seeing in uT. This usually happens > 100BaseT, since throughput is greater than the average seek time for already-active hard drives. RAID setups seem to be unaffected up to speeds of 40MiBps (reported). merlin1
i installed the 1.8 beta and it seemed to work at first then after a minute during the download it went back to piling up the info onto the cache. The download speeds normaly ran from 30 kbps to 70 kbps until it got to the end. At the end it just hung at 99.9% and dl speed was 0. I'm going to post a hjthis log to see if it is another program doing this. Also when i go to the directory where the file is downloading to it gives and error and restarts windows explorer. If this helps my hdd is ST3500630AS. jewelisheaven
... did you DISABLE the windows cacheing? still under Advanced. you have roxio installed. and google desktop search... both are reported problems coexisting with uT, they're apparently too aggressive in "checking" files opening them in BOTH read and write modes. Do you know what O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updReg] C:\Windows\UpdReg.EXE and O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OEM03Mon.exe] C:\Windows\OEM03Mon.exe are? Also if your hard drive is formatted as NTFS, turn off preallocation, allgamer wants you to waste space. Disabling the bottom two write options of "write directly to disk" and "remove old blocks" aren't necessary and increase writing to disk. You want to make sure windows cacheing of writes is disabled. Captain Lockheed
I have had this exact same problem (with Windows Vista Premium) only I had been using uTorrent for 7 months before I had any trouble. I tried changing suggested settings and even completely cleared all AppData and reinstalled version 1.7.6 having lost several Gigabytes of data - this gave me 3 more weeks without any problems before my caches stopped writing to the hard drive again.I have just uninstalled Google desktop and not only has my overloaded cache immediately written to my hard drive and uTorrent now appears to be working fine, but several other problems including a task bar freeze on booting up my PC which I thought was a Vista bug appears to have disappeared too.
