Need help optimizing my uTorrent speeds

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I've read the speed guide and adjusted my uTorrent settings and still seem to be getting slow download speeds.

My current uTorrent stats:

Download: ~55 kB/s

Upload: ~35 kB/s

My ISP is AT&T DSL avertised @ 768 kB/s. My ethernet connection is directly to the DSL modem - no router.

My speed results from dslreports.com using the Flash based test are:

D: 402 kB/s U: 300 kB/s @ 11:58 AM

D: 524 kB/s U: 299 kB/s @ 11:59 AM

D: 558 kB/s U: 300 kB/s @ 12:00 PM

(Its usually in the 6## kB/s download range during off peak hours)

My computer is a HP dv6500t notebook w/:

T7500

2GB Memory

120 GB HDD

8400m GS

I typically download files to my USB external HDD.

I've tried:

http://www.johntp.com/2006/04/19/how-to-increase-download-speeds-of-utorrent/

^ This did not help at all. If anything it may have screwed up my speeds.

Also tried:

http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992

^ Followed this guide and it kept me at my current stats: D: 55, U:35 (yes I did try torrents with favorable seed/leecher ratios)

Shouldn't my uTorrent download and upload speeds be faster than D: 55, U:35 for AT&T 768 kB/s DSL?

My you went the extra mile :) Unfortunately I have bad news, those numbers aren't 768Kbps DSL :/ They're close to 512/256. Double check with your ISP and ask if they shape during the time you ran speedtests. If they say no, make sure to get the support person's name, and continue testing. I'd say 1 test every 4 hours staggered during the day over a week will provide enough data that they can't just refute. A speedtest with those down numbers is only ~ 64 THEORETICAL maximum, which you can maybe get 90% which happens to be ~58 KiBps. Since you provided all the additional data, I hope you don't mind me commenting. Good news, that's a tight ship :D The only problem I forsee is KIS, so if you're unsure of the rules you made to use it, you can check software firewalls to dial-in your settings. Does that make sense, or did it cause you more questions?

Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to make sure I got all the info out for someone to evaluate.

So what should I expect for 768 kB/s when I run a test? What's the d/l & u/l ranges?

Just spoke AT&T DSL CS rep and tried to run the speed test on the AT&T Yahoo test site (http://helpme.att.net/dsl/speedtest/) but it is currently down. Is running speed tests on this site going to give me biased results? Hopefully AT&T DSL is not hozing me out of bandwidth.

What should be my theoretical down speeds with the full 768 kbps?

Fixed my KIS firewall settings too a while back.

Thanks jewelisheaven

Well given the set conversion rates, 1 Mbit down is 128 KiBps, and 768 Kbps is 96 KiBps theoretical. So if their plan holds you should be able to keep downloading in uT @ 86 KiBps or so when they "enable" the upgrade... I'm thinking though that you may not be upgradeable. Double check speed test results at different times so the next time you talk to them you have more verified proof. It is possible but unlikely the yahoo test would be able to give you any higher than your experienced speeds on the other sites. Did the rep get surprised when you said "i paid for 768 down, but I am only getting under 512 down, what gives?" Also my point about "do you shape during XX times" is impotant. If they won't tell you that they do, but you notice you can get better speed times at night, or late night (post 11pm) then you need to collect data points in those areas to tell the CS rep or escalated CS rep (escalation is what the support community calls "get my supervisor" heeh).
