I don't understand how utorrent works/can't download

I've downloaded utorrent 1.7.7, but when I open it and go to file - add torrent from URL - I paste the web address in of the file I want to download and it doesn't do anything - invalid torrent.

all "add torrent" and "add torrent (no default save)" and "create new torrent" does is go through to the windows of my various drives on my computer.

I have Vista Basic on my computer and a small utorrent icon appears in the task bar at the bottom of the screen towards the right,

with the cursor over it, it states: uTorrent 1.7.7, 0 (0) downloading, 0 (0) sending, 0.0 kB/s down, 0.0 kB/s up.

The Torrent application itself when open at the bottom shows:

Download DHT: 21 nodes (log in) D: 0.0 kB/s T:4.7 kB

Thats all just computer jargon to me.

I don't understand how it works or what its really meant to do.

My Flash is up to date and I have sufficent memory for storage.
