Verizon speed optimization help

Squeak

Recommended Posts

For awhile I've been reading guide for tweaking my uTorrent in order to get more speed out of it. I recently did a speed test at Speedtest.net (test results below), and found I have never downloaded even close to what that was giving me. I couldn't tell you exactly what things I have changed in uTorrent, but if you can ask for anything specific I'd gladly provide you with it. I'm going to try to provide everything the thread for posting specifications asks for.

Thats what Speedtest.net gave me, but I have never seen a download in the 200Kb/s and rarely see above 70-80Kb/s. Should I really be able to get 700Kb/s? That would be excellent. For example now I'm in a swarm with 50 seeds and 222 leechers and only getting 62.4kb/s. I've been in much bigger swarms with the same results.

Color of the network status light: Green

Port Checker: Open

Speed Guide settings:

xx/768k

Upload limit:78 Kb/s

Upload slots: 5

Connections: 100

Connections (global): 450

Max Active Torrents: 5

Max Active Downloads: 4

net.max_halfopen: 33

Operating System: Windows XP

Security software installed: Avast Anti-Virus, Windows Firewall

Router Model: Westell Versalink 327W

Modem Model: Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem

ISP: Verizon DSL

I can provide you with any other information that you may need. Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide. I'm going to bookmark this and check back at least daily. Thanks again.

Set uTorrent settings based on your UPLOAD!

And that means...really rotten settings. :(

net.max_halfopen shouldn't be greater than 8 unless you have a VERY fast line and/or are firewalled.

And even then, 33 is probably a bit much. :P

Speedtest.net is reporting speeds in kilobits/second. So 747 kilobits/second really is only around 80-90 KiloBYTES/second download speed.

You did the speed test while NOTHING else was going on, (all torrents stopped) right?

Yep was doing nothing else, also ran it a couple of times and got similar stats. So in the speed guide I should change my settings to xx/78k or the one nearest to that?

Re-adjusted my net.max_halfopen. I''m curious what does that setting do? Can you explain it to someone who isn't a computer technician?

747kilobits a low speed for a DSL connection? If so, do you have any ideas what could be blocking it?

A HijackThis! log or Process Explorer list might show what's causing slowdowns, if indeed that's the case for the low speeds.

Your DSL speed is less than 1 megabit/second down (roughly 0.75 in fact) and 0.1 megabit/second up. Your upload speed is probably barely 10 KiloBYTES/second. You'll probably have to use the 96 kilobit/second max upload speed setting in Speed Guide (CTRL+G)!

Hopefully, it will be faster after working on your computer.

While there are 8 bits to a BYTE, it typically takes about 8.5-10 bits of bandwidth to transfer 1 BYTE of a file. This is due to TCP/IP protocol overheads, BitTorrent protocol overheads, and if you allow LOTS of connections at once. (more = more overhead!)

A good "rule of thumb" for converting kilobits/second bandwidth to KiloBYTES/second usable download/upload speeds is just divide by 10.
