Squeak
For awhile I've been reading guide for tweaking my uTorrent in order to get more speed out of it. I recently did a speed test at Speedtest.net (test results below), and found I have never downloaded even close to what that was giving me. I couldn't tell you exactly what things I have changed in uTorrent, but if you can ask for anything specific I'd gladly provide you with it. I'm going to try to provide everything the thread for posting specifications asks for.Thats what Speedtest.net gave me, but I have never seen a download in the 200Kb/s and rarely see above 70-80Kb/s. Should I really be able to get 700Kb/s? That would be excellent. For example now I'm in a swarm with 50 seeds and 222 leechers and only getting 62.4kb/s. I've been in much bigger swarms with the same results.Color of the network status light: GreenPort Checker: OpenSpeed Guide settings: xx/768k Upload limit:78 Kb/sUpload slots: 5Connections: 100Connections (global): 450Max Active Torrents: 5Max Active Downloads: 4net.max_halfopen: 33Operating System: Windows XPSecurity software installed: Avast Anti-Virus, Windows FirewallRouter Model: Westell Versalink 327WModem Model: Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc ModemISP: Verizon DSLI can provide you with any other information that you may need. Switeck
Set uTorrent settings based on your UPLOAD!And that means...really rotten settings. net.max_halfopen shouldn't be greater than 8 unless you have a VERY fast line and/or are firewalled. And even then, 33 is probably a bit much. Speedtest.net is reporting speeds in kilobits/second. So 747 kilobits/second really is only around 80-90 KiloBYTES/second download speed. You did the speed test while NOTHING else was going on, (all torrents stopped) right? Squeak
Yep was doing nothing else, also ran it a couple of times and got similar stats. So in the speed guide I should change my settings to xx/78k or the one nearest to that?Re-adjusted my net.max_halfopen. I''m curious what does that setting do? Can you explain it to someone who isn't a computer technician?747kilobits a low speed for a DSL connection? If so, do you have any ideas what could be blocking it? Firon
net.max_halfopen controls the rate at which new connections are opened. Unfortunately, in Windows, this is limited to 10. Going beyond this limit causes all sorts of weird problems.
Switeck
A HijackThis! log or Process Explorer list might show what's causing slowdowns, if indeed that's the case for the low speeds.Your DSL speed is less than 1 megabit/second down (roughly 0.75 in fact) and 0.1 megabit/second up. Your upload speed is probably barely 10 KiloBYTES/second. You'll probably have to use the 96 kilobit/second max upload speed setting in Speed Guide (CTRL+G)!Hopefully, it will be faster after working on your computer. blue_eyez
Hi Squeak,Speedtest results are in kiloBITS per second. Utorrent reports download speeds in kiloBYTES per second. There are 8 bits per byte, so you are getting about the download speed you should be getting. Hope this helps!
Squeak
Yep, Switech told me that. Now I'm trying to figure out if my DSL is slower than it should be. Good to know that its an eight to one ratio though, thanks.
Switeck
While there are 8 bits to a BYTE, it typically takes about 8.5-10 bits of bandwidth to transfer 1 BYTE of a file. This is due to TCP/IP protocol overheads, BitTorrent protocol overheads, and if you allow LOTS of connections at once. (more = more overhead!)A good "rule of thumb" for converting kilobits/second bandwidth to KiloBYTES/second usable download/upload speeds is just divide by 10.
