Chublonely
Try again? Since the last few upgrades to this program I am constantly having this problem. If I have had the program open at once time and then closed it, when I go to open it back up it says it's already running (when it's not). I go to the process windows and it's listed there but when I try to end task it won't end. Therefore the only way to launch it is to reboot...very annoying when I have a ton of other things going on and I have to stop what I'm doing and shut everything down.Is this ever goign to be fixed? I've had nothing but good things to say about this program since 2005 but this is starting to become a real pain in the ass!Thanks.P.S. I just upgraded to 1.8 and it's doing it with that too! Firon
Do you use Zone Alarm?
Chublonely
Yes I do as a matter of fact.
Firon
It's a ZA problem, which we haven't figured out how to workaround yet. Basically, ZA holds the process hostage in the kernel so it can never shutdown. The only fix is to switch to another firewall, such as Comodo. Ultima
Which is free, works well, and has a complete configuration guide here for µTorrent.
shellig
I have the same problem after upgrading and do not have Zone Alarm. When I shut down uTorrent it does not shut down completely (although it looks like it did) and I have to go into Windows Task Manager and shut down the process. Also, the "update tracker" option is not available after upgrading. Any help?

Might very well be your issue.hoewood, would you be willing you try removing Norton? http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Browneyes2010
I had the same problem. But after reading this and some other posts I checked out the Advanced section in preferences and saw that bt.graceful_shutdown was set to false, when I changed it to true my problem went away. cyclometric
Hello,I am having this problem, too, and do not run Zone Alarm. I have checked my setup and everything else seems ok, though after reading this thread, I changed "bt.graceful_shutdown" to "true", exited uTorrent and restarted, but the problem still exists. thelittlefire
What is the path and command line to your shortcut to uTorrent.exe (i.e. Do you run it with /RECOVER)? You didn't install the suite for Nvidia display driver right, just the monitor driver? Can you create and post the Process Explorer DLL list for utorrent.exe too please?
cyclometric
I run uTorrent from a storage drive, X:\ and the full path is: "X:\uTorrent - Copy (untouched)\uTorrent.exe"I realize this path isn't usual (and perhaps even the ( and ) are problematic, so I could rename that path if necessary. (As I had to do when I first moved it... because I dual boot, and keep utorrent & settings & torrent files all in a single directory). I do not run it with the /RECOVER switch, no. AFAIK I have not installed the NVIDIA suite, but I do have the 178.13 driver installed for Windows Vista x64 (Home Premium). I did install Psych, but separately, and have since uninstalled it. But in my Programs/Features CP, there is a listing for NVidia Drivers, which perhaps I should uninstall and just install the driver for the GPU from Device Manager. And, finally, here is the Process Explorer info on utorrent.exe:Process PID CPU Description Company NameWUDFHost.exe 3000 Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Host Process Microsoft Corporationwmpnscfg.exe 2232 Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service Configuration Application Microsoft Corporationwmpnetwk.exe 3204 Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service Microsoft Corporationwinlogon.exe 880 Windows Logon Application Microsoft Corporationwininit.exe 600 Windows Start-Up Application Microsoft CorporationuTorrent.exe 3052 0.60 µTorrent BitTorrent, Inc.taskeng.exe 1664 Task Scheduler Engine Microsoft Corporationtaskeng.exe 1712 Task Scheduler Engine Microsoft CorporationSystem Idle Process 0 79.80 System 4 svchost.exe 824 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 936 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 976 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 196 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 312 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 320 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 1092 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 1344 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 1720 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 2576 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 2624 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationsvchost.exe 2656 Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporationspoolsv.exe 1364 Spooler SubSystem App Microsoft Corporationsmss.exe 420 Windows Session Manager Microsoft CorporationSLsvc.exe 1060 Microsoft Software Licensing Service Microsoft Corporationservices.exe 656 Services and Controller app Microsoft CorporationSearchProtocolHost.exe 3732 Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host Microsoft CorporationSearchIndexer.exe 2756 Microsoft Windows Search Indexer Microsoft CorporationSearchFilterHost.exe 2404 Microsoft Windows Search Filter Host Microsoft Corporationrundll32.exe 1240 Windows host process (Rundll32) Microsoft Corporationrundll32.exe 1732 Windows host process (Rundll32) Microsoft CorporationRAVCpl64.exe 1704 HD Audio Control Panel Realtek Semiconductorprocexp64.exe 4944 15.60 Sysinternals Process Explorer Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.comprocexp.exe 4544 Sysinternals Process Explorer Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.comnvvsvc.exe 908 NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 178.13 NVIDIA CorporationMSASCui.exe 1680 Windows Defender User Interface Microsoft Corporationmobsync.exe 2840 Microsoft Sync Center Microsoft CorporationLSSrvc.exe 2524 LightScribe Service Hewlett-Packard Companylsm.exe 680 Local Session Manager Service Microsoft Corporationlsass.exe 672 Local Security Authority Process Microsoft CorporationLightScribeControlPanel.exe 1776 Hewlett-Packard Companyjusched.exe 1988 Java Platform SE binary Sun Microsystems, Inc.Interrupts n/a 0.60 Hardware Interrupts googletalk.exe 1792 Google Talk Googlefirefox.exe 1124 0.60 Firefox Mozilla Corporationexplorer.exe 1580 Windows Explorer Microsoft Corporationehtray.exe 1800 Media Center Tray Applet Microsoft Corporationehmsas.exe 676 Media Center Media Status Aggregator Service Microsoft Corporationdwm.exe 1548 Desktop Window Manager Microsoft CorporationDPCs n/a 2.40 Deferred Procedure Calls csrss.exe 556 Client Server Runtime Process Microsoft Corporationcsrss.exe 620 0.60 Client Server Runtime Process Microsoft CorporationCore Temp.exe 1748 Core Temp bgsvcgen.exe 2468 B's Recorder GOLD Service Library B.H.A CorporationAWC.exe 1812 audiodg.exe 792 Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation Microsoft CorporationaswUpdSv.exe 1440 avast! thelittlefire
Yeah, that's handles mode (Ctrl-H), could you edit with DLLs (Ctrl-D). I like your Sarah Silverman I'm wondering if Avast monitoring H:\Videos could be the problem?
cyclometric
When I change to DLL mode, and select uTorrent.exe, the lower pane doesn't have any content. But here is the saved file nonetheless. Am i supposed to show the processes in tree view, and select the parent process, i.e. explorer.exe? Oh, yeah, and i checked -- Avast is not monitoring the uTorrent in its "On Access Protection Control" for P2P apps... I have specifically unchecked the uTorrent checkbox in its list of programs to monitor. thelittlefire
Process in tree view? If no DLLs show up... something is really weird If there's nothing running inside it sounds like you have a ghost/zombie however I've never seen that with uT.OK regarding Avast. Did you just update uT by chance? I'm confused now unfortunately.
cyclometric
OK, I just checked and even though I was indeed running the 1.8.1 latest version, I went ahead and redownloaded that version (the latest) and replaced the one in my utorrent folder, and now I can see DLLs in the Proc Explorer window, here is the attached text -- but I'm also going to check and see if that fixed the problem... will post again when I have the results. thelittlefire
12639... yeah that's the latest 1.8.1Did you save the 'corrupted' 1.8.1 ? I'm... elated the problem is gone
cyclometric
No, I'm sorry... I just overwrote the existing file. It's so weird because they were the same footprint and the details, but whatev-! I'm just glad it's fixed. If it happens again I'll be sure to save off the corrupted file first, though. thelittlefire
Very strange indeed. But you stuck through to the end I am curious, how did the window show up if it didn't have any DLLs, lol You're sure you only ever had 1 utorrent.exe process running. Cheers, and adios. cyclometric
Hi, again,Bad news! The problem is recurring. This time I can post the "corrupted" copy of the executable, if you think that might be the cause. But I just ran a diff on the version I am executing, against a version of the file I just downloaded from this website, and it said files were identical. And, oddly enough but not surprising, I opened Process Explorer, and once again when I select utorrent.exe the DLL window is completely blank. ?!?!Any suggestions?Thank you in advance,Will***************************Once again, this is 5 minutes later....I think I found out what the problem was -- I found this thread on some Ubuntu forum, and figured maybe something in the registry was fouled up. A search for "utorrent.exe" revealed that the key:HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\uTorrent.exe\shell\open\commandwas set to:"C:\Program Files(x86)\utorrent\utorrent.exe". I changed it to the path to utorrent that is actually in use (X:\utorrent\utorrent.exe, and downloaded a torrent, and lo and behold! After downloading the torrent file, uTorrent loaded the file as expected. I was going to search just in case there were other instances where that (obsolete) path might be stored, but hopefully that was the primary culprit. Also found references to the "C:\Program Files(x86)..." path here:[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\ElevationPolicy\{1E7C1419-305E-4E43-8E0A-B6066BD12481}HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\uTorrent(DisplayIcon, InstallLocation, and UninstallString)Wherever the old path was listed, I changed it to the new path, and it seems to have done the trick, but what a pain -- there ended up being a bunch more references to the old path among the Firewall Settings. I probably could have just deleted those and let the firewall auto-create them when no rules were found, but, we'll see how this works.Just thought this info might be useful to you guys. Thanks! Thanks,
