µtorrent freezing at random, unable to pinpoint problem

Recommended Posts

I have been experiencing a freezing problem with µtorrent 1.8.3.

I do not recall the problem happening with 1.8.2, and I haven't used 1.8.3, simply updated the last time I opened it to check my settings for a friend.

The problem happens shortly after running µtorrent and seems to re-happen every now and then at random. When it does, in the task manager, the utorrent.exe process does not seem to get any spike in CPU use or memory use.

When I say "freeze", I mean the program will stop responding and become unusable. This happens with AND without torrents running and with AND without torrents actually in µtorrent list.

When it stops responding, if I end the task using the task manager, the utorrent.exe process will stay there for a good minute or two (haven't exactly sat down to count exactly how many seconds it stays there) prior to disappearing.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit w/ SP2. My locale is US english although I used to have a French MUI installed. OS is up to date.

Here's a log of HijackThis! (although I doubt it will serve a purpose)

End of file - 9530 bytes

As you can see, I am running two instances of Folding@Home GPU client on 2 video cards. I am also running 1 instance of Folding@Home SMP client. OptiSAFE Sentinel is my UPS program & service. Toddlerkeys is a program to lock the keyboard and mouse so the cat doesn't randomly type while I am away. Katmouse is a program to enable universal scrolling for windows not focused. Both CTX* programs are Creative Labs program, part of the X-Fi drivers. Both razer* programs are part of the Razer drivers for my mouse. wspace32.exe is a desktop management solution to enable window snapping and others. HoeKey.exe is a hotkey program. Taskix is a program to enable re-organization of task in taskbar. miranda32.exe is my multi-protocol IM client.

The rest of the applications should be self explicative.

I do not know why exactly HijackThis! reports so many missing files, but I can assure you that the files are present and not corrupted.

I stripped two personal programs from the list, hence why the size of the log won't match with the final line "End of file - 9530 bytes". They do not impede µtorrent functionality as they ran prior when using 1.8.2 and as µtorrent 1.8.3 also freezes when I am not using them.

Cheers, hopefully someone somewhere has an answer. Honestly i'd go back to 1.8.2, but I don't believe I kept a copy.

Go figure, it would be easier for archiving if the utorrent build would be named utorrent-1.8.3.exe instead of utorrent.exe. Not thinking I'd run into problems, I have simply overwritten my "backup" copy of 1.8.2. Doh!

NTWind Window Space is an utility to add transparency, snapping and various other functions to Windows Explorer. I use it mostly for snapping à la Linux but it does much more. Used to use AllSnap which is freeware but does not seem to play well sadly. :/

I tried with both completely closed (made sure by looking in the task manager) and µtorrent still freezes. Thanks for the help by the way.

The computer I use for F@h went offline, hasn't been doing crap >-< | Yours is faster then mine anyway (I think..), though I'm out of state and the computer I'm on right now is a quad core meant to be used like an HTPC, gonna put it to the test later ;)

When you have that stuff closed, make sure the two entries I listed are no longer appearing in Process Explorer's DLL list for µT. Also, this may not solve it but making sure you're properly configured can't hurt: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992

'bout the file missing issues, I've read a few times that HJT has issues on 64-bit vista. The programs you removed from the log, when you say personal...???

I have a bit more than one computer doing folding, hence the "big" numbers.

Yes, no entries appear in Process Explorer DLL list when they are closed.

Configuration is fine (not trying to brag, but I'm a computer tech too...).

Router firewall is configured accordingly, Windows firewall is not interfering with anything. µtorrent showed/still shows when not freezing the green icon regarding connections. I have manually set parameters not to hammer my router/computer with too many connections at the same time.

I imagine HJT does have some issue with Vista 64-bit. Clearly those files are missing, and even in a newly created VM, HJT shows those files as missing.

The program I removed from the log are personal programs that are not available to the public (in-house), they never impeded on µtorrent functionality in the past and they do not hook anything. As I said, whether they are running or not, µtorrent still freezes.

I am very curious about this bug, I'll try to see what happens with a debugger when µtorrent freezes. But otherwise, I'm clueless as what could be happening.
