JungleBoy
I'm seeding a torrent on 2 computers connected on separate networks - they're in different locations. Is it ok to use initial seeding mode on multiple seeding computers ?(I switch initial seeding mode off when the first peer reaches 100%)
DreadWingKnight
It is DOABLE to do things that way, but because of limitations in initial seeding it won't perform as well.Switching back to normal seeding isn't a good idea that early. You should just leave both in initial seeding until the torrent is able to properly sustain itself.
JungleBoy
My theory is that if both seeds are seeing the same peers then each seed should only be issuing new pieces and not duplicating pieces that have already been uploaded. But when the number of peers starts rising to large numbers then each seed is likely to start issuing pieces that have already been uploaded. The initial seeding mode computers have no knowledge of what each one has dished out - the seeder can only see what its peers have and each seeder will be connected to a different group of peers. I suppose what this leads to is whether it's possible to allow multiple initial seeding mode computers to send to each other what pieces they have dished out to make the seeding more efficient. This could be a useful feature for the future.
DreadWingKnight
The problem comes up with how initial seeding works in uTorrent. Each client is sending the same pieces out in the same order unless they are seen elsewhere in the swarm. There will end up being a lot of overlap of uploaded pieces until full distribution is attained. This problem doesn't come up in bittornado super-seed because bittornado does rarest-first then random rather than rarest-first then sequential 0-x
JungleBoy
It looks like the each initial seeding computer sees what's already out there and dishes out what it thinks is a unique piece. That might not be true when there's a large number of peers but it looks good enough.
