DNS problems

Well normally I'd hate to dig up an old thread, but this warrants it.

I just upgraded my internet after moving,

Went from 6D0.5U to 15D2U. With this change came a new modem. My ISP apparently favors the 2Wire models now. (Personally I liked the speedstream ones)

I started using uTorrent and quickly noticed that I was getting DNS failures just like the post above.

I narrowed it down to the crap hardware (as you will most likely confirm through many posts on this forum) the usual disabling of flood protection did not help, (possibly because of my high transfer rate of 1.7MB/s)

I then realized that this device (and most likely anyone elses device that is also having this problem) routes dns lookup's through itself.

You can specify what dns server to use in it's own settings, but your computer will send all requests to it first. So after so many lookups it will start blocking them all for a few seconds. Get's rather annoying. (I tried disabling resolve IP's but that didn't improve anything)

The only fix I found was on this page http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r24593936-Speed-Problem-Failure-to-find-sites-DNS-problem-w2Wire

Basically you need to put DNS servers manually in your network properties, so instead of checking through the router it just does the lookup. Lookups happen about 4 times faster than when it is working and will no longer be blocked because of excessive query's.

I used 4.2.2.6 and 4.2.2.4 as they were the fastest for my system but there's instructions on how to check on that page I linked to. This DNS benchmark also works to check which one's are the fastest for you https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm
