subtitles

I am probably going to get in trouble for asking this, but I have been in trouble before.

I am a tad confused about subtitles. Sometimes they will work and soetimes they don't. I have tried both the .mkv and .mp3 files with the .srt subtitles and for some films they just don't work. Is there a trick I am missing?

While on the subject have any of you ever altered the subtitles so they synchronize properly. I have noticed on some TV series that as the commercial periods come by the subtitles get further and further out of sync. I see how they work and can see how to change them. Tedious at best and exceptionally time consuming. If I did it and they worked for me how could I post them so others could use them also?
