freedomdwarf
I've been using uT for a couple for years now and I understand most of it.What I haven't grasped yet, is some of the terminology and I can't find anywhere that explains it in simple terms that I can understand and picture in my mind.I'm sure I'm not the only one that has trouble with understanding these terms and what they mean.I vaguely understand what a seeder is.In the old days, no seeders = no downloads. These days, I get downloads when there are no seeders and only peers. So what is the significance of seeders and peers these days?? [confused.com]And what exactly is a 'swarm'???So when I see in uT "Seeds: xx of yyy connected (zzz in swarm)" what exactly is it telling me?And.. "Peers: xx of yyy connected (zzz in swarm)" what exactly is it telling me here?Is it the same 'swarm'? If not, what's the difference??I assume, when it says 'xx of yyy connected', uT has found 'yyy' connections in total and I've latched onto 'xx' of them, yes?So what does the 'swarm' bit mean??!?Simple answers please. freedomdwarf
This might help explain some things:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_BitTorrent_termsI tried looking there - not much help.I found the definitions of Seed and Peer overlapping and confusing It appears that either can have 100% or only pieces. What's the difference??Like the definition of a 'Swarm' -"Together, all peers (including seeds) sharing a torrent are called a swarm. For example, six ordinary peers and two seeds make a swarm of eight"So that would make the two figures for '(zzz in swarm)' for Seeds and Peers to be the same, but they aren't.Example (my current active torrent) -Seeds: 6 of 143 connected (19 in swarm)Peers: 98 of 670 connected (230 in swarm)DHT reports 819 nodes.I just can't seem to get my head round what the numbers mean with respect to each other and how to make sense of them and get a picture in my mind of what's happening. schnurlos
Example (my current active torrent) -Seeds: 6 of 143 connected (19 in swarm)Peers: 98 of 670 connected (230 in swarm)F.e. 143 seeds and 670 peers are known by tracker, but just 19 seeds and 230 peers are online. You're just connected to 6 seeds and 98 peers. It's not necessary to be connected with as many or with all! freedomdwarf
That makes sense now! Why couldn't the Wiki say it as simply as that??!?Thanks
