John Smith
Woke up yesterday an ALL the movies I've download via uTorrent the past 6 months were gone! Not in the trash, just gone. Like they were never there. When I opened uTorrent I see this next to each (previously) seeding file: "Error: Invalid download state, try resuming". So what happened to them? Did the movie studios hack me and delete them all? Did the govt make them disapear? Or is there something very wrong with uTorrent? My money is on the latter. I'm running Version 1.8.7 (39558). The computer, iMac OSX Yosimite, didn't crash or experience any issues. I didn't install any software. I don't have anti-virus software. And I live alone. Weird. The kicker is I was about to upgrade to Pro. Have been using the free version to make sure I liked it and it wasn't buggy. Now I'm glad I didn't part with my cash. Perhaps uTorrent got sick of me freeloading and wanted to teach me a lesson?
DreadWingKnight
Did the movie studios hack me and delete them all? Did the govt make them disapear? Or is there something very wrong with uTorrent? My money's on none of the above. Chances are, if you check your downloads folder, the partially downloaded files are still there. Just reload the torrents. What probably happened is that during shutdown something on your system (or OSX itself) prevented uTorrent from writing its resume file. John Smith
Looked in my downloads folder and the only torrent file is the one that was actively downloading when the files dissapeared. It eventually completed successfully and is fine. All the missing files were completed. In fact I'd already watched 80% of them (movies). So, if I'm understanding correctly, even if I still had the torrent fies, I'd have to download them all over again. Definitely doesn't make me want to purchase uTorrent Pro. DreadWingKnight
The .torrent files aren't what I was having you look for, it was the actual files referenced by the torrents. Do you have screenshots showing what you were seeing?
John Smith
Gotcha. Yes, the below screen shots show the completed uTorrent downloads (in an error state) and the contents of the downloand folder. The one file still there, A Few Good Men, completed after the disappearance event.
John Smith
Seems the screen shots didn't post. Perhaps they're too large.

DreadWingKnight
External drive?Have you tried forcing a re-check on the problem torrents? The only thing that would cause your issue is someone with access to your computer deleting the files. uTorrent doesn't actually behave that way. John Smith
No external drive. How do you perform such a re-check? I agree. But, since nobody has physical access to my machine, then that would mean I'v been hacked. The last time I let someone reomote in to my machine was almost a year ago (Apple support). I use two VPN's simultaneously and have never been hacked before, that I know of. I did receive two cease and desist requests from my ISP, hence the reason for now using two VPNs. The only entity I can think of that would be motivated to hack in and delete copywrighted material (movies) are the movie studios. I've never heard of such activity occuring and I don't see how they could get in even if they wanted to. They would have to compromise/cooperate with two independent VPNs in two countries. Neither of which claims to store logs. If it's not uTorrent it's a mystery. Sure seems to me that a software glitch is more likely than a super connected & talented movie studio hacker for hire. DreadWingKnight
Re-check SHOULD be an option in the command-click menu (right-click if you have such a mouse)
John Smith
Ok, did the "Force re-check" on two of the offending files. They instantly moved from "completed" to "downloading". The status on each file showed "checking x%" for a few seconds then changed to "stopped". http://imageshack.com/a/img538/1048/RtQbiL.png So I guess that means rechecking didn't work? Any other suggestions or possible (and plausable) causes?
John Smith
I'll take your silence as a no.
