Brisar
Hi everyone kep up the good work.I have been having no end of trouble forwarding ports after installing BitDefender. I have uninstalled this software and tried a couple of others but still without being able to open a port.I have removed all internet security packages and gone back to AVG free with the Windows firewall and still cant get a port open.Is there a preferred port for incoming connections in utorrent? I have tried lots of randomize numbers to no avail. Each time I entered the port number into Windows firewall. My system worked perfectly before installing Bitdefender so anyone any ideas?I am using XP home SP 2Thanks for any helpBrian
jewelisheaven
Could you check through my post please as it ... attempts to resolve some issues experienced lately (applicable most times there is a question about settings), which may also apply to you even though you do not state whether the problem is acute and happened recently in an upgrade or if it is long-standing.Also, could you provide the HJT log (mentioned in the How-To) to see if someone else can see other possibly problem software/ incomplete uninstall. Brisar
Thanks I will work my way through your post this evening.I am connected via Virgin cable broadband with no router just the standard supplied cable modem. Its driving me crazy why now that I have returned to my original basic set-up I cannot open an incoming port. This all happened when I tried a PCPlus cover disk trial of BitDefender. As soon as I loading the software everthing stopped. I was unsuccesful in gaining any advise from either PCplus or BitDefender so I uninstalled the software (using their own uninstall software). Now even with a vanilla Microsoft firewall and AVG virus checker no port opens. Aggghhhhh why?????Brian
jewelisheaven
Hmm it is possible it didn't uninstall cleanly. Could you post a HijackThis as mentioned from the How-To... in the meantime before you go through the from-the-ground-up procedure. It may be as simple as that :/ But it's not 100% positive. Brisar
Thanks dlinkI did as you suggested and removed those bits shown as bad, but still no success. It has got weirder cause I downloaded Bitlord and using exactly the same setup Bitlord works and shows a port open.Any ideas?Brisar
jewelisheaven
BitLord supposedly includes a method for getting around firewalls called NAT Transversal (so does BitComet). Err, wait I may be mis-stating it. It could also be UDP hole punching. In either case, you still don't have a port forwarded, but the above clients have mechanisms to work around that problem. uT does not, and will tell you there is a problem.Regarding the logfile BitDefender still has/had "communication server"... why does bitdefender need to communicate as a service? If you changed more things could you re-post a current logfile please

jewelisheaven
Yup. That's a colloquialism in the USA The only possible problem still on your computer I see is Windows Defender which is unrelated to your problem of ports. Are you SURE you set up the port rule correctly on your modem? If you go to start->run->cmd->ipconfig /all, what does it say for "Internet Gateway" and your IP address. If your IP is 192.168.x.x then you need to forward ports on your modem "a grecian saying it's all greek to me"
Brisar
Hi jewelisheavenI have no way of configuring the modem as its just a blob to me provided by my ISP.The IP adress is 86.20.48.126Subnet mask is 255.255.252.0Default gateway is 86.20.48.1Brisar
jewelisheaven
Ahh yup. If you don't have the ability to forward... i'd look for an alternate ISP truthfully. But something I haven't mentioned even though it's old, http://azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs shows the (current?) state of ISP throttling, but I bet they've caught up in the mouse trap game... heh. I'm going to ask a stupid question right now so forgive me. Have you tried installing BitDefender and uninstalling ALL of it again to see if it'll take all its processes with it this time? I understand you already tried and are still experiencing problems, so maybe a reinstall then a direct uninstall and reboot will get it done. I may have been hasty in the beginning, but it never hurts to check with your ISP... asking them if you need to forward ports for applications may give you a resource they've made on their site for the purpose... You have a WAN IP there, so theoretically you're open... Are you sure none of the following show you as either stealth or OPEN on your uT port? I use http://www.canyouseeme.org and https://www.grc.com/x/portprobe=YOURPORTNUMBER as well as the built-in http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=YOURPORTNUMBER to test open ports. dlink
Hi brisar can you you have a look @ this for me hit start then control panle then click on network conections doubl click on you internet connection click propertiesthen advancd settings then exceptions. Have a look in there to see if you have told your firewall to allow that port number you ues for utorrentif not make a rule for it. You should see utorrent DOUBLE CLICK ON ITthen make a new rule up for it. call it utorrent and tick the box uDp TYP IN THE PORT NUMBER YOU AR USEING AND THEN DO THE SAME FOR TCP
Brisar
Hi DlinkDid what you asked and yes utorrent is there with the port number. I have to restate that all was well until BitTorrent and that opening port difficulties only started after then.Tried your links and the first states:Error: I could not see your service on 86.20.48.126 on port (42000)Reason: Connection refused
dlink
Error: I could not see your service on 86.20.48.126 on port (42000)Reason: Connection refused omg stop putting your isp up m8 port number over 50000would help
jewelisheaven
if you're listening on that port (Ctrl-G in uT) then there's something still blocking it. Verify the setting is for YOUR PORT to YOUR IP... and trying a values 50000-65000 would be a good idea too as dlink says.
Brisar
Hi jewelisheavenHave set windows xp firewall to allow port 53886 on both tcp and udp but it has made no difference. Will try your suggestion about installing and uninstalling bitdefender and get back to you. At the moment I feel like giving up and teaching my laptop to become a paratrooper! Can't remember If I said before, but my connection is via cable.RegardsBrisarHi jewelisheaven (cracking name by the way)Well installed Bitdefender and uninstalled - nothing.Downloaded BitComet and that shows its listening port is blocked, even though the ports are set in Windows Firewall.Have even tried temporary switching Windows Firewall off, but that made no difference. How high would you recommend I drop this bloody thing from for best results?Brisar
subyroo
Don't drop it just yet matey :-), I'm having the same dilemma and have followed all the suggestions made in here and I'm using WinXP Pro SP 2 - Windows Firewall and NOD32 v2.70.39 and nothing is working for me either. Brisar
Although its not good for you subyroo at least I am not alone!I have tried everything including running without a firewall at all for a SHORT time and still the bloody port would not open.At times I have experienced some very high download speeds so cant understand it.I think my best bet is to make sure my laptop is on the house contents and show it some freefall experiences!Brisar
jewelisheaven
If the ports are not open without your software firewall there is a block somewhere else. This can include anywhere between you and your ISP. If it's your ISP there's nothing else to be done.
Brisar
I have now connected a friend's laptop to my broadband connection and installed utorrent client. It connected correctly and the port was reported open. I then randomised the prot number and connection worked correctly. This points to my computer being at fault, but I am completely stumped how to find what bit of software is causing the problem.Am I destined to the dreaded complete reinstall of windows????Brisar
