drragostea Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 Not sure if this is the right place...I've heard those anti-P2P organizations have been putting fake trackers so they can log your IP address.Care to add on?
Switeck Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 Yes, though it's more about fake torrents and monitoring real torrents to record who visits them.
drragostea Posted July 16, 2008 Author Report Posted July 16, 2008 So do you mean... that anti-P2P organizations also log those who download real torrents?
Switeck Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 Yes, then they send Cease-and-Desist warnings to the ISP of the ips they record, demanding that whoever it is on that ip quit...or they will be sued.Other threads on the subject:http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=42333http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=42838
drragostea Posted July 17, 2008 Author Report Posted July 17, 2008 Okay. Thank you for that valuable information.Oof. The Cease-and-Desist letter sounds scary and threatning. Just one more question admin."How" do you receive the C-a-D letter? Like by visiting a torrent website? Or just by opening your browser the next time you log in?
Switeck Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 It either appears as "just another email"...or you get a letter in your snail mail.Or a big burly man comes to your door, claims to be on the side of the law, and tells you to bend over and take it now...or it's going to really hurt if you're forced to give in...in front of a court audience.
drragostea Posted July 18, 2008 Author Report Posted July 18, 2008 E-mail in your ISP webmail? Can you explain what you mean when you say 'bend over and take it now...'?
jewelisheaven Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 It's an allusion to anal rape... basically the tactics the http://mafiaa.org use to discourage all consumers from buying albums from their artists, by treating and ASSUMING all people who know about digital content are pirates.
Switeck Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Yes, the C&D letters often arrive first as regular e-mails.The typical worst-case scenario has someone "recommending" you pay them ~$1-20k or face them in court where you might be faced with fines over $100k. Usually, it's still civil court...but thanks to new laws, not always!Downloading movies before they're in the theater is probably the "best" way to get the attention of unwanted emails.
Switeck Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 It goes to your email tied into your ISP account....Your ISP may or may not even inform you that you have an important email.
