uTorrent process hangs (v1.8, Vista)

Hello,

After closing uTorrent from tray, I notice the process uTorrent.exe is still present in Task Manager. If I click End Process, nothing happens. Only rebooting will end it. The process doesn't seem to consume any CPU usage.

I'm using the newest uTorrent (1.8), Vista Home Premium, ZoneAlarm Free and Norman Antivirus. I don't think ZoneAlarm has anything to do with it - I had read about it conflicting with uTorrent on some cases, after which I replaced it with COMODO Firewall, however, the problem persisted. Now I'm back to ZA again.

Do you think it matters that I have uTorrent.exe on an external eSATA hard disk? (I moved it there because I had some problems with downloading files to the external drive when uTorrent ran on C:, but I'm not sure if that was the cause for the problems...) It seems that when the process hangs, I can't copy anything to the external drive function extremely slowly - opening an video file takes half a minute, and copying anything to the hard disk is practically impossible.

get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, Ctrl+D (to show the lower DLL pane), select the µTorrent process from the list, Ctrl+S (and save the list somewhere you'll find easily -- like the Desktop), then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here

When it freezes again... You can actually force a crash dump to be generated, like so:

In the Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer, look for the [PID] of the µTorrent process. From there, File > Run > ntsd.exe -p [PID] -e [PID] -c ".dump c:\jit.dmp;q"

where [PID] needs to be replaced with the PID of the µTorrent process found in the process list viewer (don't include square brackets). The resulting dump can be found as c:\jit.dmp. Do this when µTorrent hangs, and post the dump.

Does Norman Antivirus have any firewall-like features?

Stuff like "internet protection" or "spam blocker" is a dead giveaway.

If so, Norman may be interfering with uTorrent...and those features need to be disabled/uninstalled.

I was unable to run ntsd.exe. Attempting to run it resulted in "Windows cannot find 'ntsd.exe.' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Apologies, I keep forgetting that Vista no longer has ntsd.exe installed by default. You can force a crash in Vista via the Process Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).

Norman Antivirus doesn't seem to have any firewall-like features. It does have in the settings a tab called Internet Protection, but that includes only the scanning of emails, incoming instant messages and such.

My brain is broken today. I did mean Task Manager, not Process Manager. Anyhow, the Task Manager's context menu for the utorrent.exe processe should allow you to force a crash dump.

What should happen? After pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc in Task Manager, the cursor icon loads for a brief moment, but there's no sign of anything actually happening.

By the way, after I exit uTorrent and when the process hangs, the CPU is partially (about half) used by System and one or two of the several svchost.exe processes. This goes on for a few minutes, after which CPU idle is 95%.

I'm going to see what happens if I start uTorrent from C: instead of the external drive. EDIT: No change, still freezes...

I wouldn't want to uninstall Norman... It came with a 3yr subscription for this laptop, and although there is an installer, I don't know if it will work a second time. Let's first see if we can find the cause of the problem elsewhere.

EDIT: Any progress checking those logs??

EDIT 2: By the way, exactly the same problem occurs with BitTorrent 6.0.2.

I had the same problem. I have managed to fix it by trying to guess the interfering program.

In my case it was LeechGet, because it's also a torrent client, and even if it is in background it causes uTorrent to hang.

Try experimenting, it should not be difficult.

I hope I have solved it for sure... so far so good.

The only programs I have now that I didn't have on my desktop (on which uTorrent worked perfectly fine) are the ones that came with this laptop. For that reason, I wouldn't want to uninstall them... But none of them are running in the background, except for Norman Antivirus mentioned in an earlier post. They couldn't possibly interfere with uTorrent if they have no running processes, could they? There are also some other programs I have installed that weren't on my desktop, but I doubt they'd have anything to do with it, since they're not running in the background either.

I'm going to keep the uninstalling of Norman Antivirus as a last resort, which I'm going to use after testing every other torrent client to see if they work.

Well, it stayed stable for quite a bit.

Now, it's still in trouble...I did nothing but clicking task bar icons and the like.

I am switching back to 1.7.7 that's the cure.

I guess it's a problem with those new caching disable functions...something involving memory.

Since the program HANGS (and does not CRASH) no dumps were ever generated. What are you talking about??

I find it (and let others judge as well) not clever,correct,polite... to assume that I am ignoring the problem, without knowing what I did or did not, and instead of realizing that the program is not stable (on some systems) as it is claimed, so I just had to make one step back.

And, for your knowledge, I have always sent dumps out ("now" you know it).

I'm sorry I was referring to post #2 in this thread... where there is specific problem being investigated, even though the dumps are sent to the developers when you say "Yes" having the dumps created when the problem is happening helps immensely. That your problem was alleviated by removing LeechGet is interesting, and good that you found a solution, but if you did go through and FORCE a dump and have them tell you indeed something about LeechGet causing uTorrent to freeze-on-close is a more specific solution. I didn't even know about LeechGet before you mentioned it ><

If you're looking for my (the original poster's) uTorrent crash dump that Ultima requested in post #2, look at post #11.

EDIT: If you were critisizing me in your post about ignoring the problem or not sending crash dumps to developers, well, how have I ignored the problem, hmm? I came here to ask help, and there really isn't much else I can or am willing to do without their help. And as for crash dumps, there are no crash dumps to send, because the program doesn't crash, it freezes, or hangs, to be correct. If you weren't critisizing me, ignore this.

Ultima, thanks for the link. I wonder how I missed that... anyway, I disabled internet protection in Norman, rebooted and confirmed that internet protection was not enabled (the tab didn't show up in Norman's configuration). Still, the problem persists. I ran uTorrent for an hour or so, then clicked exit in the tray, and after several minutes it still shows up in Task Manager. So obviously Norman's internet protection isn't the cause.

I'm going to have to try an earlier version of uTorrent next.

As I wrote previously, I don't think anymore that the hang-up is due to a specific program.

I believe that it's a conflict of processes, maybe with taskbar itself, maybe system processes involving memory, who knows.

It just freeze without doing aything but staring at it...so It has to be some system activity (or a Vista issue? )

If there is a way to force a dump in case of freeze up, that's good, I didn't know either.

I have to work out how to do it, however.

As I said, the program just hangs, and if you close it, the process stays in task manager. You can kill it, but it lasts a long while running still there.

I don't know how many are having the same trouble, anyhow as the problem shows up systematically it's very easy to observe by any developer.

I gather that in your case uTorrent actually freezes while you're running it, that is, before you've closed the program (from the tray icon or File menu)? If so, your problem is different than mine. uTorrent doesn't freeze on my computer, it's the process that is left hanging after closing it from the tray icon. The tray icon does disappear, but the process in Task Manager doesn't. If I try startin uTorrent then, it just says "it seems there is another instance of uTorrent already running, but it isn't responding."

Let's say this way:

Once it hangs (by itself, say you switch window and go back to uTorrent window) you can, and have to, close it from tray icon or program window red X top right end corner).

From here the behavior is exactly what you described in your very last post.

You can tell that uTorrent is hanging by observing the mouse pointer going into waiting/working mode (default for vista is a rotating circle). Good if that is not happening to you at all.

However, for one reason or another, when I (or we) close uTorrent I observe your very same behavior.

When it hangs of course the file menu is not accessible as the whole window is stuck
