DreadWingKnight
Have you checked device manager to make sure your hard drives haven't lapsed into PIO mode?
trayde
no i will do that what is PIO mode if it has how do icheck and fix?thank you for your time.
DreadWingKnight
PIO mode is a VERY slow and VERY processor intensive disk transfer mode.It can be found in the properties of your IDE channel in device manager on the advanced tab."Current transfer mode" is what to look for.
trayde
had a look but there is no current transfer mode under the advanced tab has channel properties, devices and device properties that is all and there is nothing under any of those. Firon
You could try uninstalling AVG, but it probably won't help. Updating all the other drivers might be a good idea. It's hard to diagnose hardlocks.

trayde
the other ide channel is identical to this as regards to Firon i checked all the other drivers and they say they are up to date. i dont really want to remove avg but will if there is another good free alternative you might suggest. AVG has been good to me for several years now.Found this under nvida nforce serial ata conttroler can i untick the LET BIOS SELECT TRANSFER MODE and keep it on DMA or is that bad thing like overclocking or something?
Firon
No, you should keep that checked.Just try uninstalling AVG to see if the freezes go away. It's merely for troubleshooting purposes.
trayde
i had two x 512mb ram (original) and 1 x 2gb (i put in 12 months ago) i took out the 512's and put the 2gb in first port last night i haven't had a freeze since (coming up 8hrs) could it be let's hope so. If it freezes again i will try uninstalling AVG.Thanks guys
Firon
Ah, faulty RAM can certainly cause hardlocks.Since you're on Vista, you could use its built-in memory diagnostics. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/test-your-computers-memory-using-windows-vista-memory-diagnostic-tool/
