MightyAnt, could be av or some kinda tagging, you can grab Process Explorer to check. When you see the error, press CTRL+F in Process Explorer and enter the name of a file from the torrent, programs using it will be shown. Certain filetypes may or may not be affected.

Started having similar problem, log in UT says this repeatedly for all files I'm downloading when they error out:

Just started having the problem yesterday, I have 410GB free on my HDD (C:), so it's not the latter.

I restart it and it will continue to DL like nothing was wrong but after a few minutes it will happen again.

thx! i think i found the problem: it was media sharing in vista =)

though i couldn't find it using process explorer, vista's standard "resource monitor" did it well, cause it keeps history, while process explorer searched for programs that are using that file right now.

Thx GTHK, helped my problem as well.. My AV was tripping it up by trying to actively scan as it was DL'ing. Turned off my AV and no more problems. Still don't know why it just started doing it yesterday all of a sudden, maybe has something to do with heuristic scanning option being enabled.

Think it may have been the Windows Media Player network sharing service.

Have disabled this in the services and so far havent had this problem again.

I have had the dreaded "Error: The process cannot access the files because it is being used..." crop up recently as well.

I'm running WinXP Pro x64 with all the patches.

What I found was that Roxio's "media services" seemed to be causing the problem. I turned that off and the torrent that was getting stuck seems to have gotten unstuck... It would run for a bit (less than 1.0% of the torrent would download) and then poop out. It is at 32% and running so I suppose that was the problem.

I had earlier turned off file system indexing but this one torrent would NOT stop dieing off.

Roxio installs their "media services" by default so you might want to check your system tray for that little guy.

There should be a better way to isolate these issues than the low-level poking around we've been using. I personally wasted more than a few hours trying to track this down. Perhaps there is a better bit of code BitTorrent/uTorrent could use that would be immune to getting stuck?

Considering that roxio is specifically mentioned in the FAQ entry on the error, it doesn't need as much low-level poking as you'd think if you have it installed.
