Avoid having same files in multiple torrents/folders

Several suggestions covering same thing:

1. When selecting torrent for download check whether its files arent available in user defined location - may be "Downloaded files folder" or any drive user selects. >> keep only one file

2. Check whether files in torrents already downloaded arent in multiple locations and suggest removal of duplicates

Both of these are between very difficult and impossible because hashes aren't per-file.

Then I guess it would be necessary to have utorrent maintaining its own database with file hashes and compare only files existing on HDDs. The important part isnt only comparison, but also the functionality of linking files to all the torrents they would be in. Challenging.

This wouldnt avoid duplicate downloads, but storing duplicate files is bigger pain in the ...

and such functionality is more in keeping with the mentality of traditional p2p systems, of which bittorrent is NOT.

I use a separate file hasher to find duplicate files on my hdds.

If you use some standalone application which only finds duplicates, how do you delete them afterwards when you need to have them available for several torrents? I guess you would have to use something like symbolic links, which is not really handy to keep once there is plenty of them.

I keep fewer than 100 torrents loaded, most of my duplicates are gathered through other means.
