calvin2099
I have been using utorrent now for quite a while and I have always achieved good download speeds(up to 1.4 MB/s), but recently I have not been able to get the speeds(if I'm lucky 200kB/s) on utorrent that I have got in the past. I'm def not an expert when it comes to network configurations but I understand the guides for the most part so I have read through and followed the guides as posted by Ultima but with no luck in resolving my issue. I was hoping to get some help from the moderators of this forum, maybe there is something that I have missed or something small that I am not doing right. I have tried many different torrents network configurations and reinstalling, but nothing is getting me back to where I was. Tell me what information I need to provide and I will supply asap.A big thanks in advance!-only change I've made to settings is net.max_halfopen = 50(also used program to tweak tcp/ip to the same)-utorrent network status light is green-port is open and configured properly, I have tried deleting and recreating.-speed guide reads upload = (734kbit/s [89.5kB/s]) download = (11.82Mbit/s [1.4MB/s])-OS is xp sp3-Bell internet security-no router, modem is 2wire 2701HG-G-bell is obviously my isp (i have tested on googles M-labs and it says my isp is not throttling my connection)-I have a an AMD athelon 64 x2 dual core processor and I have read the forum and applied the drivers but it did not help. I hope this helps
DreadWingKnight
-no router, modem is 2wire 2701HG-GYou basically just contradicted yourself with this, the 2wire 2701HG-G is a router and needs to be configured. Also, which internet security did bell re-brand for their security software? calvin2099
if you read all that I wrote you would see that I have configured my ports, and I wrote that simply to give a description of my network setup. You would also see that I'm not trying to prove that I am some kind of expert on the subject so if your looking for a pissing contest look elsewhere I'm looking for help here not critics!to answer your question it's bell internet security Ver. 9 re-branded by Radialpoint SafeCare Inc. DreadWingKnight
http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ <-- torrents from here give you what sort of speeds?
calvin2099
I just finished downloading OOo_3.2.0_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe from the open office site, I reached a max d/l speed of 1.2 MB/s which is what I am used to getting, what does this mean?(bad torrents)? also I looked at the seeds and there wasn't one seed that was transferring over approx 70 kB/s. With other torrents in the past I was able to connect to seeds that were uploading to me at upwards of 700-800 kB/s from one seeder? this maybe irrelevant but I'm curious. DreadWingKnight
It's probably just piece availability and swarm conditions causing you to have slow settings assuming you haven't done something bad like following a youtube setup guide for uTorrent.
calvin2099
never even though to look on youtube for a setup guide I figured this was the best resource to use. Strange though I have tried many dif torrents since my speeds dropped and before this problem nearly every torrent I downloaded achieved almost max speeds, now aside from the one you just had me download I haven't seen anything above 300kB/s and it only reaches that speed temporarily dropping again to under 100kB/s. also utorrent never used to affect my web browser and I have problems with slow web browsing now too! and what is meant by piece availability?btw thanks for the quick help! adelescent88
Hello, I am very new to using utorrent and downloading, I am using a router and a wireless desktop top computor, I know nothing about my system except to make sure that my firewall settings are disabled for utorrent. The problem is I just moved and when I set my computor back up a file that I was downloading ShinChan and King of the hill season 3 are now saying ETA at 3weeks when it was like 2days which I thought was long but they are pretty big like 14GB and 37.3GB so my question is do I need to congifure my utorrent according to me using a router (always had the router never did any configuring) or is it slower because I am using my wireless feature for my desktop? I hope I don't sound like a dummba*** asking but if I don't ask how can I learn. Thanks much
DreadWingKnight
Piece availability has to do with how the bittorrent protocol works. As for the rest of your issue, the rest of the information that the slow speed guide requests is required now. DreadWingKnight
Actually, posting directly is the preferred method. You missed the settings from uTorrent that you're using from preferences - queueing and preferences - bandwidth. Also, an increased net.max_halfopen has between 0 and no effect on speeds, so it's not recommended to do. calvin2099
I don't understand that last comment? but I understand what you meant by the settings I missed, I don't know of any other way to post them but writting them out:Bandwidthmax u/l rate: 89kB/smax d/l rate: 0:unlimitedboth apply rate limit boxes: uncheckedglobal max # of connections: 230max # connected peers/torrent: 70# u/l slots/torrent: 5Queueingmax active torrents: 5max active d/l: 4seed while ratio = 150% or seeding time is: 0seed task priority: uncheckedseed goal(limit upload rate): uncheckedanything else??? DreadWingKnight
I'd say run fewer torrents at once (max active 3, max downloads 2) and otherwise leave those settings unchanged.Other than that, as long as you're getting the green checkmark in the status bar, there's not much to do. calvin2099
thanks for your help, I'll just try to find better torrents. I'm still curious why I can't connect to a seeder at a higher transfer rate ie/ 80kB/s. I know I'm repeating but I used to get some seeds uploading at 700-800 kB/s now the only way for me to achieve those kinds of speeds is to have 40-50 connected seeders? is there some setting that limits the upload rate of seeders in my settings that could be configured incorrectly??? DreadWingKnight
Doubtful, but splitting your connection's upload fewer ways like I've had you do will probably help.
calvin2099
I've applied the settings you recommended, hopfully it will help in the future. I will try some more torrents, and post later if any changes occur or if I come to any different conclusions. thanks for your help on the issue! Switeck
"I'm still curious why I can't connect to a seeder at a higher transfer rate ie/ 80kB/s."Math and statistics makes this a *RARE* event. For the few broadband connections that have lots of upload bandwidth...they tend to run lots of torrents at once and upload to multiple people on *EACH* torrent. So their average upload speed per upload slot is probably still <50 KB/sec.For the rest of us...100 KB/sec is near-max upload for standard ADSL 2+ and even many cable ISPs don't give much more. Split that just 2 ways and it's already below 80 KB/sec.
