Will enabling encryption slow my speeds?

If anything it will speed your connections up. Set outgoing to "Enabled" and "allow incoming legacy connections" and you'll be fine.

So why is encryption not enabled by default? Surely it can only be a good thing to have as many peers as possible using encryption.

the reason for it not being enabled by default was stated by ludde as being "not enough people are using it yet," of course it's kind of contrary and self-fulfilling that by leaving it off by default there won't be a huge increase in the users using it, but a more gradual one.. and that was pointed out, but yeah, that's why i guess.

Actually, IIRC, it had something with the way it connects. When you click enable, all the connections are attempted using encryption first. Eventually, uT catches on that some (most) clients aren't connecting and will try again without encryption, but there will be a delay and the ramp-up may look slower. Since one of uT's advantages is not "fast ramp-up" (that's BC, and they do certain ... urr things to give them this advantage), enabling it when very few people use encryption will create a slow-up, and the Speed Problem forum will be busted from all the posts.
