DreadWingKnight
Smoothwall is a router solution, not a software firewall.
atlant
and yet, is it worth the bother for a small home lan?
atlant
oh, and how do you mean, router?
Firon
You can't use a laptop for it. It's used as a router, so you need a PC with many PCI slots so you can add an NIC for each computer, and one to hook up to the modem.
MagusG
Firon, or you could have just 2 nics and a switch...
Firon
That's true. But a laptop's still not a great choice. They're not really things designed to be on 24/7...
MagusG
Oh yeah, definitely, laptop = not a good router.
atlant
I have a Latitude d800 in the study. Its been on almost continuously for the last six months (I got it for $400) without too many glitches. Most torrent activity is on a usb HD. My notebook from work is no good, and the other home PCs belong to the kids. Is it really a good idea to install smoothwall on one of them? Considering my son is better informed on these matters than me...My dell is sitting on a heatsink - so it shouldnt suffer so. Its just a question of trust, I guess...
