Computer hangs

Patrick

Recommended Posts

Hi,

when i have µTorrent running in the background, my system hangs after an uncertain amount time. If i leave it downloading in the night, i just know my system has stopped at some time. Sometimes its after 5 hours, sometimes its after a few minutes. It is certain it will hang eventually.

The only thing i see, is the current screen, nothing more. No BSD, no black screen, just the screen what was. The only thing i can do is reset my computer. He does this with every torrent cliënt.

My computer doesn't do this when i'm not using a torrent program.

Does anyone have the same problem, or even better, the solution?

Gr,

Patrick

I read all things what could be wrong or happening. Including the complete incomp. soft. list in the faq.

i used this list to try and solve the problem:

* Updating the router firmware

* Turning off the UPnP (in the client and in the router) and doing manual port forwarding

* Restricting the number of global connections to 200 or less (may need to go below 100, depending on the router)

* Turning off DHT

* Lowering net.max_halfopen and bt.connect_speed

* Putting the modem/router into bridge or gateway mode (doesn't apply to modems that aren't routers)

* Getting a new router/modem

No effect though.

I tryed to find something similar in the sticky topics, but there is nothing similar. Most problems are about UTorrent freezes, but the pc recovers itself after a few seconds. Mine doesnt recovers at all. It just freezes, and nothing happens after that.

Edit: By the way, the problem occures with and without firewall/virus-scanner.

Get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, File > Save

Copy and paste the process list in the .txt file that you save from there.

And what OS are you using? If it's Windows XP SP2, what do you have your TCPIP.sys limit set to, and what is net.max_halfopen set to?

I use Windows XP Pro SP2, (legal btw)

The tcpip.sys is left default, i have no tracker problems.

I hope you can help me with this.

Possible problem-causers:

WINWORD.EXE 3836 Microsoft Office Word Microsoft Corporation

(Is word running all the time, or just the moment of the screen capture?)

aswUpdSv.exe 1676

(this part of avast?)

iPodService.exe 2460 iPodService Module Apple Computer, Inc.

qttask.exe 1960 QuickTime Task Apple Computer, Inc.

iTunesHelper.exe 1920 iTunesHelper Module Apple Computer, Inc.

(these may be resource-heavy and may contribute to the problems without being the main cause.)

daemon.exe 1980 Virtual DAEMON Manager DT Soft Ltd.

(Is this something you can shut down to test?)

OUTLOOK.EXE 3280 Microsoft Office Outlook Microsoft Corporation

(was outlook running all the time?)

TOTALCMD.EXE 856 Total Commander 32 bit international version, file manager replacement for Windows C. Ghisler & Co.

(just an unknown as far as stability is concerned for µTorrent.)

CLI.exe 2180 CLI Application (Command Line Interface) ATI Technologies Inc.

CLI.exe 3244 CLI Application (Command Line Interface) ATI Technologies Inc.

CLI.exe 3252 CLI Application (Command Line Interface) ATI Technologies Inc.

(why 3 instances of CLI.exe?)

I doubt qttask.exe is the problem processes, no matter how much I dislike QuickTime. What I do wonder about as well though are the other Apple services (iPodService, iTunesHelper), as I have a feeling they do some stupid indexing. CLI.exe runs 3 on 3 instances because ATI ported their driver control panel to .NET -- it's normal behavior.
