damienzor Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Hi, I just did a routine spyware scan on my PC, and it showed uTorrent to be a Trojan Horse. What's the deal? Should I be alarmed? I only ever download the legit thing, and I downloaded the .exe from utorrent.com. So, why is it saying this?Pentium 4 3.2Ghz 180GB HDD 1GB RAMThe anti-virus I am using is CA Security Center.I don't know what uTorrent version I'm using as I'm now slightly apprehensive of opening it up. I'm slightly computer illiterate when it comes to Trojans and Viruses. Ask me anything about setting up a game server, and I'm yours. Thanks!
Saribro Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 If you got the .exe from this site, it's your security software being wrong. (most likely detecting that it is packed with UPX, and wrongfully assuming that all packed software is evil).
jewelisheaven Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 packing software. It's how uTorrent is still < 250 KiB . The exe is infact double that, but with UPX it stays so small.Think of UPX as a transparent RAR or ZIP compression.
damienzor Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 Should I be alarmed that it's showing as a trojan?!
jewelisheaven Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 No. Tell them to update their heuristic analyses.Anyone who maintains µTorrent is malware/trojan deserves no respect or business.UPX has been a valid exe packer for years.
ajones81 Posted December 15, 2007 Report Posted December 15, 2007 CA in any case deserves no respect or business, considering the crappy products that they continue to put out.
