mklangelo
I'm running XP Pro with latest updates. I'm using UTorrent 1.7.7I'm always getting knocked off line. I've turned off DHT, I've set net.max_halfopen to *4, I've also set the max number of global connections to 100. With a well seeded torrrent I get GREAT speeds but not for long...I also did a full system virus scan and I'm clean. I have several layers of protection and scan often. AVG antivirus and AntiSpyware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster and Adaware 2007.I've also turned off IP resolution.I have my firewall turned off. My cable modem is a Motorola SB4100. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.Below is a HJT logfile:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 4:55:55 PM, on 4/15/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16640)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeF:\Programs\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exeF:\Programs\Norton Ghost\Agent\GhostTray.exeF:\Programs\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeF:\Programs\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exeF:\Programs\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSec.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXEF:\Programs\Norton Ghost\Agent\VProSvc.exeF:\Programs\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMAgent.exeF:\Programs\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\StarWind\StarWindService.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exeC:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Desktop\utorrent.exeF:\Programs\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeF:\Programs\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exeF:\Programs\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exeC:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Desktop\HijackThis.exeR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS01?FORM=TOOLBRR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS01?FORM=TOOLBRR0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://screamingsports.com/default.aspxR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS01?FORM=TOOLBRR3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Firon
What's your router?
mklangelo
No router. Straight to the modem. I did have one months ago for my Vonage. Now I just use port 59995 for UTorrent.
Firon
Cap your upload lower and see what happens.
mklangelo
I have tried that before. I always thought that the highest stable upload speed would help maximize the download speed. Is it possible it's my ISP? I have Road Runner Cable. Maybe they recognize this type of activity and bump it off line perhaps?Just a thought. GTHK
Road Runner hasn't given me any throttling problems (when doing maintenance, I couldn't access the forum though, my sustainable upload speed went up for some reason XD). Anyway, I think Firons point was to try a lower upload to see if you're choking your connection/hardware, did you try setting it fairly low and using an OpenOffice torrent? As an aside about RR, I've had overall throughput reduced somewhat after large download sessions, either that, or their maintenance was needed last year and they didn't fix things till it really broke down. jewelisheaven
If you're uploading at or NEAR-MAX your download is likely impacted. Test this by keeping ONE torrent uploading near your maximum speed, and then starting one of http://slackware.com/torrents/ If you don't maximize the download.. which may be anywhere from 200-500 if you're in one of the shaped AND crippled areas, you know the upload is likely to blame. Lowering the upload allows more download... so start @ 50% of previous, and then edge up 2 or 3 KiBps every test (only needs to be 1-2 minutes) until you see the download rate sharply decline.I will tell you this. Towards the end of my old modem (which had served me for YEARS)the internet was b0rked regularly. When I stopped running bittorrent apps overnight and it still crapped out that's when I knew I had to try a new modem. This was only because I know the router was not the problem. They don't seem to like to just give out modems... and they'll try to send you a service tech. TBQH by the time you get to that point, their tech won't do anything you haven't already tried And if they plan to bill you for the visit it goes double-NO.I would also say their phone center techs-- which are apparently separate from "local" techs-- can help test your line for instability. And if you are one of the people calling in the evening hours between 5 and 8 they're likely to be happy to hear from a patient concerned and not-rude-and-irate-customer
Firon
The reason I ask is because some surfboards would crash out when your upload was too high. That, and some ISPs might be lame and disconnect you for too high sustained upload.
Wolverine2007
hi.... i am also facing the same problem... the internet is getting disconnected after 3 - 4 hours after putting something for download... after that i have to restart the system to get connected again... i ran all the virus and spyware scans but it is not showing me anything.... jewelisheaven
Are you sure it's not the modem / router? Try resetting THOSE instead of your computer. http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992
