Encrypted connections and ISP blocking

I thought that when I check to use encrypted connections and if the tracker supports it, I can't have my speeds screwed up. I know my ISP says they are limiting P2P to half the line speed, which seems to happen in last days, but how is it possible?

They use fairly advanced firewalls that can detect packets sent using the bittorrent protocol and they delay them to the point where they only allow a set amount of them through, effectively making hte protocol useless on their networks. The only surefire way around it is using a VPN. Encrypting the traffic within the bittorrent protocol may or may not help get around it depending on the way they detect it.

The tracker has absolutely nothing to say about whether your seed/peer connections are encrypted or not.

If you're using a standard HTTP tracker, it is completely unencrypted.

udp trackers are unencrypted as well, but at least not using TCP. :P

Why not? All the connections go through the tracker and it is using https, so... I am no networking expert, so might need some enlightening on the subject :)

^^ Delusion.

Fact: NONE of the peer connections go through the tracker whatsoever, and only a small selection of trackers actually have https support.

Fact: ISPs don't just rely on the protocol communication header to identify bittorrent connections anymore and CAN detect if you're torrenting regardless of your encryption settings. VPNs MAY be able to hide it, but there are no guarantees.

So what's the point of https trackers? (and yea you are right about the data connections themselves, I was thinking about something else or what)

How does the packet filtering work then? Are there any articles about this? I'm interested.

edit:

Weird thing is, I ran some test which supposedly should tell you whether yout ISP limits torrents or not and the result was negative. The speeds analyzed were around the max of my line - and yet, when I download stuff via uTorrent, I get 100-120kB/s max in last days (used to get up to 300-350 before)

The HTTPS tracker is itself secure and encrypted...but that may mean little if it's on the list of "bad addresses" your ISP maintains.

The Glasnost test results can be negative and your ISP may still throttle AND disrupt.
