Using 1.5 if 1.6 causing my pc to freeze?

I'm using McAfee antivirus, no firewall (unistalled the McAfee firewall). Of other software installed that might cause some problems, I have: Steam, Norton Ghost and Dell network assistant. The computer is _one_ week old and this situasion is really frustrating so any help would be truely appreciated.

utorrent.exe using ~30% cpu even when downloading at 2 kb/s...sounds like a firewall/antivirus program reading every incoming and outgoing packet µTorrent is receiving+making.

It could even be viruses/spyware/adware...despite antivirus software, the "latest and greatest" viruses and adware usually slip through undetected just fine.

Can you get HijackThis and use it to post a startup list here?

That'll show a whole horde of (probably unwanted) stuff running in the background.

didnt have any of the mentioned software installed. patched tcpip.sys to no help.

I have no idea what eHome is but it's located in the windows folder

That's a bit strange because the only thing i've done to change the standard dell software package is to uninstall McAfee and to install Kaspersky anti virus 6.0, Daemon tools, Steam, Msn Live and winamp. Any recomendations for which programs to get rid off?

You have a Creative Audigy sound card, therefore you don't need another audio (Sigmatel) system, there should never be more than one audio processor enabled. If you have an on-board audio chip I hope it is disabled in BIOS. You should stop CTDetect and CTsvcCDA from running at startup. The following quotes are from AnswersThatWork:

CTDetect (CTDVDDet): Background task installed when you install the full suite of software for Creative's SoundBlaster Audigy 2 soundcards. This task detects the insertion of a DVD in your DVD drive and starts up Creative's DVD Audio.

Recommendation :

If you do not have a DVD drive, you can disable this task straightaway on the Startups tab of The Ultimate Troubleshooter, otherwise this is down to end-user preference. For the record, in our case, because of our generally troublesome historical experiences with Creative background CD detection tasks over the years, in March 2005 we still always disable this task.

CTsvcCDA: Creative Service for CD-ROM Access. This background task gets installed by the Windows 9x/ME drivers of some Creative SoundBlaster soundcards. It also sometimes gets installed, in error, on Windows 2000/XP by non-driver related Creative software suites, such as Creative Jukebox, etc.. The purpose of this task is to provide better performance for your CD-ROM or CD/DVD-Writer drive though data caching.

Recommendation :

With modern CD-ROM and CD/DVD‑Writer drives (36‑speed and above) this task is of absolutely no use to any system, so on Windows 9x/ME PCs we recommend you disable it on the Startups tab of The Ultimate Troubleshooter. On Windows 2000/XP PCs, particularly if you have just upgraded from Win9x/ME to Windows 2000/XP, this task (converted to a service during the upgrade) may give you endless error messages or, worse, may prevent you from being able to create CDs and DVDs with your CD/DVD-Writer drive.

Thanks for your response jsillup. I have a couple of questions for you regarding your post. Do i have to buy the ultimate troubleshooter software to prevent CTDetect and CTsvcCDA at startup or is there another way? I'm not a cpu wiz and don't know much about changing settings in BIOS. And another question: it seems a bit strange to me that a soundcard driver is causing my computer to freeze when i'm not using the soundcard, the dvd drive or anything like it at all. But the again, I'm not the expert ;-)

@HansTanks: I don't know if these two Creative utilities are causing your problem, only that you don't need them. You also don't need UpdReg, all that does is check to be sure you registered your Ceative hardware. But driver conflicts can definitely cause problems. If your computer came with an on-board audio chip and you installed the Audigy card yourself please make sure you uninstalled the original drivers. The fact that the Sigmatel tray application is still running seems to be left over from an on-board audio solution.

You can use msconfig to disable the Creative and Sigmatel utilities: Start -> Run -> msconfig, untick the entries on the Startup tab (CTsvcCDA might be on the Services tab).

Whether you installed it or not...it's running!

Running processes:

Also I saw this running:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe

While it's not likely to be spyware/virus (though there is a virus or 2 that steals that same filename!), it can cause crippling of a system according to posters here:

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/dllhost.exe.html

...it seems to depend on what DLL processes it's launching.

Applications nowdays just install lots more always-running files than they used to. Norton/Symantec Corporation seems especially bad about it.

I use ProcessViewer from www.speedguide.net to kill processes/applications running in memory.

HijackThis *CAN* remove them from loading in the first place...but is best used with caution -- and after LOTS of extra reading on what EACH process does. I've removed vital O.S. dlls and had to use backups to get the computer running again.

I have tried most of the tips given to me here but to no luck. Could it be possible that this would fix itself if i only reinstall windows and buy a new wlan card? Thanks for all the advice guys, but i'm getting so tired of this situasion that i'm willing to spend some of my hard earned student loan ;-)

The thing is i don't need or use half of the software installed. It's software included in the dell or windows media center edition. I'm not a computer wiz and a bit afraid of tempering with windows and its settings. What it's the sofware who uses the network on my cpu? I'll try to unistall them and see if it makes a difference

I have been a fan of uTorrent since I 1st heard about it but I have been having my PC freeze up on me for the last 5 months

I have just bought & rebuilt my system HD

I have tested the RAM, temp everything

The only thing that is always running when my system freezes & have to turn off bu the power button is uTorrent

I have noticed that just before my PC freezes (crashes) uTorrent seems to lose network connection

I know this because the speed bar drops

Is it uTorrent that is doing this, it seems like other users are having the same issue

Please help
