Kcaj
Yo. After downloading the .exe file from the link provided for utorrent 1.7.5 and running it, there is no user interface present. I figured it might have been part of the new version, so I tried to download a torrent to test it out. After running the torrent file, I got a prompt saying "There is already an instance of utorrent running.End all processes and try again."after trying and failing to end the process, I uninstalled and reinstalled the program. A couple times. I don't know what else to do, call me a newb if you want, but please help!

jewelisheaven
How are you normally running uT? If you open Windows Task Manager, do you see uTorrent.exe listed there? If you don't remember starting it, perhaps someone else with administrative rights to the computer started another copy? Would that be possible? If you end that task and try to start your copy, does it start up?... If you don't know what I'm talking about press Ctrl-Alt-Del (ON 2K or greater ONLY) to bring it up. Maybe the icon/shortcut you use appends certain options... could you right click and go to properties and copy-paste the command line for the shortcut? Kcaj
I had uT version 1.4 before this. I never saw a reason to update, so I didn't. However, after my downloads started getting a minus sign next to them I decidded it was time to update. That's when my trouble started.I'm the only pc on the network who uses utorrent, or any torrent program at all. My roomates are lame like that. ANYWAY, I can't end the task, period. It's been several hours now since I started the sumbitch, and it won't STOP. End process, uninstall, everything I know to do won't stop it. Trying to copy/paste the command name for the shortcut brings up an error window that says "The name 'utorrent' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct.'Anyone?
jewelisheaven
Probably upgrade settings hiccups.OK, so in WTM you only see the process for utorrent.exe you downloaded? If you kill that, then, backup your settings folder (You know where that is right?). I'd think at the very least you'd only have to lose your settings.dat. I recently went through the 2 year history of uT for bug checking, but I did test incremental versions, I didn't skip versions.Have you checked out Process Explorer before? It's mentioned in the How-To and can also be used as a better-than-WTM with its process information. just double click on the process name you want to look at and you can see all sorts of information. Kcaj
jewelisheaven: like I mentioned, I can't kill the utorrent process. It won't die! Something weird though, it's at 312kb right now, but yesterday it was at 5000+kb. My laptop has been on all night, in case you were wondering. I'll check out the Process Explorer you're talkin about, see if it has any insight.Firon: here's that Hijack logfileLogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA)Scan saved at 3:06:22 PM, on 1/10/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCDsrv.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\wltrysvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\bcmwltry.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Dell\NICCONFIGSVC\NICCONFIGSVC.exeC:\Program Files\Dantz\Retrospect\retrorun.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\wdsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exeC:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exeC:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exeC:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exeC:\Program Files\support.com\bin\tgcmd.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\WDBtnMgr.exeC:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\Apoint\Apntex.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exeC:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exeC:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exeC:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exeC:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymSCUI.exeC:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jucheck.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NSMdtr.exeC:\Documents and Settings\Jack Groome\Desktop\Ikai!\Misc\HiJackThis_v2.exeR1 - Firon
Try ditching Norton (it's really awful anyway).ALso, use lspfix to fix this entry: O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll
Kcaj
Looks like Norton was the problem. Stupid anti-virus. Can you recommend a good replacement? Also, what's the O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll problem you wanted me to fix? What is it exactly?
jewelisheaven
LSP stands for layered service provider, and is a frequent way browser hijackers hook into your networking subsystem so you have no choice about visiting their sites... Reading up about "new.net" will also give you some insight in that regard. However with reports about nwprovau.dll I did look and it's from the client services for netware (It however is always wise to investigate unknown DLLs yourself). I guess you had/have been making additions to your network protocols.
Kcaj
Huh, alrighty. Thanks! And yeah, I was just messin with my network protocols. Thank again!
