Download speed decreases dramatically when video is being played

Hello,

Recently I've noticed strange behavior of uTorrent - anytime I watch video - download speed goes totally down (from 5-7 MB/s to 100-200 KB/s (yes, MegaBytes/sec and KiloByte/sec)).

Absolutely no difference what quality video I watch (poor quality DivX, HDrip, BDrip, HDTVrip, HDTV, BDremux, etc.) and what played do I use (MediaPlayer Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC), GomPlayer, Windows MediaPlayer 11, etc.)

As long as I stop and close the player - speed goes up again. And as long I open it and press "play" - goes down.

Also there's no difference where media files are (same disk, different physical disk, removable media, etc.)

Illustration:

capturesnf.jpg

1 - Torrent download started

2 - MPC-HC started

3 - MPC-HC closed

4 - GOM player started

5 - GOM player closed

6 - Windows Media Player started

7 - Windows Media Player closed

etc, etc, etc.

CPU load - 40% max (GPU takes main load on HD files)

Memory load - 40% max (of 4 GB)

Download location - internal SATA RAID 0 (Stripe)

Athlon X2 5000+ (2.6 GHz) on nVidia n590

uTorrent version - 2.0.2 (latest at the moment)

Windows 7

System is clean - absolutely no unnecessary software, no "tweaks" or smth like that.

I'm not a noob, but I have to admit - I'm out of ideas, don't know what to blame. Seems like I've already ruled every possible reason out.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

EDIT:

P.S. Forgot to mention - I've used search function of this forum, used Google and all other search methods available. Found no solution.

This post is my last chance.

Don't think its related to your problem but you mentioned the gpu taking load off the decoding. If you're cpu is running at 40% when playing a video then your gpu isnt helping anything. And not every player you mentioned there supports that function either, MPC for instance only supports pixel shading (to enhance the video), VLC gpu decoding is very experimental so far and only works on the newer of nVidia gpu's, ATI does not work yet. and Windows Media Player does not support any of those functions yet.

Curious, what kind of graphics card are you using, and what resolution and codec was the video you were playing during that graph.

One thing I did notice was that both upload and download go when starting a video which would lead me to believe an entire network lag/failure. Can you try with another bandwidth intensive program and see if the same thing happens playing a video. I'm guessing this problem is not unique to uTorrent. Try and find another bandwidth monitor to watch while doing this. My recommendation is find a large http based download to test it with.

2 paintball9:

I'm using MSI GeForce 8800GT 1 GB OC.

And as I mentioned above - 40% are MAX CPU load.

Dual display (Primary 22" monitor - 1680x1050 and Secondary 40" LCD TV - 1920x1080). Both DVI.

I usually use MPC-HC and there's a noticeable difference on CPU load with or without GPU support enabled.

No additional codecs packs are installed. Using internal. MPC-HC have everything needed to play virtualy any movie. So does GOM player.

Grath could be reproduced with any source.

But I believe this is not relevant to the problem with download speed.

I was thinking of network lag causing this problem, but I can't imagine a connection between media being played and network lag. The only connection I see here is that NIC is MB integrated, theoretically could cause some influence on chipset load. But I don't think so...

But I will definitely try to test network speed on http download.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

2 Switeck - yes, definitely. And quite often.

Upload limit is set to 5120 KB/s and my bandwidth (upload/download) is 70 mbps inside the country and 7 mbps outside the country, so if local peer is connected - he can get as much as he can take.

Of course, peers from abroad get to many bottlenecks.

But how is upload limit is relevant to download speed during video playback?

EDIT:

By the way, upload speed goes down as well. You can see that on the grath.

Additional steps might be needed to get GPU acceleration going, if your card even supports that. That aside, you have a weird problem. Internet security software? Have you taken a look at the Disk Statistics in µT? Updated network/disk/chipset drivers?

My bet - re-set re-tune your HD cache:

- see my tips/sig for recommended uT DH cache settings ([A])

- increase the read cache a bit

- try to disable indexers on that drive

PS:

- post the uT cache graphs with the above

- upgrade to 2.03 to improve download overhead in the near future...

- we only support the latest versions ... :)

2 GTHK - GPU support is on, for sure. No internet security sw, all drivers are up to date.

2 paintball9 - I did tried http download - not affected by video players.

2 rafi:

- see my tips/sig for recommended uT DH cache settings ([A])

**Already done. Settings were OK.

- increase the read cache a bit

**Already tried that. Tried again. No effect.

- try to disable indexers on that drive

**Done (disabled indexing on download directory). No effect.

- post the uT cache graphs with the above

**Here Goes:

capture2t.th.jpg

- upgrade to 2.03 to improve download overhead in the near future...

**Done. No effect:

capturem.th.jpg

- we only support the latest versions ... :)

**OK, I'm using latest version now ;)

Any suggestions?

2 rafi -

Here's cache settings:

capturepec.jpg

You don't believe me? Told you, settings are the same as your recommended. Well except for automatic cache size increase. But I don't think this is relevant.

And what about MPC-HC. You know something I don't?

Or just personal preferences?

Never ending holy war? :) Which media player is the best? VLC, MPC, KMPlayer?

Yay MPC:HC. I think the mpc-hc site had some info on extra steps that had to be done to enable and then test GPU support, but I'm not sure..

Drivers updated from where? Microsoft update doesn't do good enough, make sure you got your drivers direct from the manufacturer, and if applicable from the company that built the whole system.

2 GTHK - GPU support enabled. I'm sure. And anyway even if you presume it is not - this is not the issue. CPU load is less than a half (with player, uTorrent, browser and etc running). MPC-HC using MAX 20% of CPU during HD content playback.

And of course I'm not using windows update for newest drivers. Downloaded from www.nvidia.com.

2 rafi - I did tried another players, as I mentioned in my first post. Not the issue, I suppose.

2 paintball9 - yes, that might be a source of a problem. There's some additional software from nvidia, such as NVMonitor, Nvidia Control Panel and etc. But it's hard to believe, that software for monitoring and change of settings (just an interface) can be the issue. But I'll try to remove everything from nVidia in the evening. Thanks!

2 rafi - nope, not a bug, I was trying different settings, noticed that 32M cache is not enough on local downloads, so I've doubled the amount. Probably screenshot is made before that.

Now it's 64M.

OK, I will try to disable "turn off read cache when upload is slow". I can't see the connection to the issue, though.

2 anotheruser - very interesting idea you have. Definitely worth a try.

Only one small thing - quote from your second link:

"The throttling by default is 10, meaning 10 network packets per millisecond (10000 per second), which counts for about 15 megabytes per second.

This is more than one 100 megabit network connection can deliver, but a lot less than one gigabit connection can deliver."

I'm sitting on 100 mbps network, have 1 NIC (second is disabled), no Wi-Fi or VMs, so, even with throttling enabled I still should get my 70 mbps, but as I said before - download speed drops down dramatically - from 5-7 MB/s to 300-500 KB/s.

But still, I will definitely try to increase or maybe even disable (as an experiment) throttling index.

Thanks! I will keep you posted!

1st link in my signature, last post, last section of that last post.

HijackThis and Process Explorer (plus DLL list!) logs are the only things I can see left to try.

I don't know what that'll show, if anything...and making sense of complex computer setups using them is almost beyond my ability, but maybe someone else will spot a "problem child" in the lists.

Assuming the problem isn't caused by what anotheruser pointed out...

You don't have any non-Microsoft DLLs loaded into uTorrent.exe's memory space according to Process Explorer. Normally that's good, but in your case I was kinda hoping for something there which might be an easy fix to remove. :P

You do have quite a few 3rd party programs running that I haven't seen mentioned here before, so almost any of that could somehow be to blame. :(

And the winner is.... Anotheruser!

Yes! His solution WORKED! :)

I completely turned off throttling and it worked - no download speed decrease at all!

Of course CPU load by uTorrent.exe increased, up to ~50% (fluctuating between 30% and 50%) and up to 60-70% average summary load , but only on a high speed download.

Tested with single torrent. Average download speed - 7 MB/s, max - 7.5 MB/s.

Now I will try to find correct setting for throttling will start with value of 70 and will decrease it little by little until download speed will start to fall down again.

Anotheruser, I owe you a beer ;)

Switeck, what 3rd party programs exactly you were talking about? Just wondering.

EDIT:

Done testing.

Results - with any value from 10 (default) to 70 (maximum) download speed drops down. The only small difference is how low. With "10" it's down to 200-300 KB/s and with 70 down to 600-900 KB/s (some peaks of 1-1.5 MB/s). Still not good.

Bottom line - quote - "Network throttling can be completely turned off by setting the value to FFFFFFFF (hexadecimal)".

Seems like the only solution to me.

Or I might think of getting stand alone NIC with it's own processing capability.

So, that's it guys. I'm really grateful for your help. Take care!
