memory leak in 1.7.6

Recommended Posts

Im new to the forums but not to torrents or utorrent, been a happy users for.. a few years. Updated to 1.7.6 when it was avaliable and havent used it for anything just left it running in the background, was outta town for the weekend, and I just got back. My computer was running really slow, so I poped open taskmanager to see where my processor was going, but instead it was my memory that was going. 92% physical memory usage of 2GB, of that 1,121,300K was to utorrent.. ask me thats a tad high even when being heavily used. I restarted utorrent and its now just using 9,188K which is to be expected.

intel q6600 on a 680i sli mobo, 2gb gskill single stick..

bug with the nvidia firewall. the fw itself leaks memory while hooked into ut, so it looks like ut's process is eating ram. only fix is to ditch that firewall.

Also, that's not the dll list we're looking for.

Could you edit the Process Explorer log above to show the DLLs for utorrent.exe (start procexp.exe as normal, Ctrl-L, Ctrl-D, click utorrent.exe, Ctrl-A, copy-paste)? :D

I don't recognize these O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\ui0detect.exe,-101 (UI0Detect) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\UI0Detect.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: @%systemroot%\system32\vssvc.exe,-102 (VSS) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\vssvc.exe (file missing) since it's unknown, you may want to check if they're legit.

Also you may just want to uninstall Nero Scout. It's likely to cause more problems with access permissions than it solves by being an indexer.

You guys really screwed the pooch in the 1.7.6 update.

You keep on blaming the problem on firewalls, when you should look in your code.

I had been running uTorrent for a long time without problems, but when I updated to 1.7.6, I immediately encountered problems.

The symptoms:

- networking stops or gets interrupted

(as evidenced by browser errors)

- CPU utilization goes to 100% (shared between uTorrent and SYSTEM processes)

- entire system comes to a screeching halt

The symptoms usually occur after I delete torrent, then exit uTorrent program.

The uTorrent program does not exit, but continues to consume CPU resources on machine. I cannot destroy the process using Windows task manager or other programs.

I am not running anything other than vanilla XP (home) firewall.

nvappfilter.dll NVIDIA IAM LSP NVIDIA 2.02.0000.0465

Injected into the uTorrent process in the above user.

If it were a bug in the 1.7.6 code, 100% of users would have it happen.

Considering you haven't even posted either a hijackthis or a process explorer log, I would say that anything from solar winds to user error could be the real cause.

It seems we have different ideas on how to respond to user problem requests.

You seem to think it's the user's fault for trying to run your program in their environment.

I seem to think that a developer should be responsible to try to analyze the problem to the best of their ability.

I disagree with your statement that mine is an isolated incident, because, after perusing past forum posts, I discover that this is a long-outstanding problem that had been "solved" by requiring that the users delete some component of their system, external to utorrent.

In this case, I have stated that the problem started occuring in the 1.7.6 release, and it seems to manifest itself in the program termination phase. An additional clue is that the SYSTEM process seems to be consuming a lot of resources.

The responsable developer would ask "What has changed in this release which would cause this unfortunate user to experience such problems?". He would not then accuse the user of running "unacceptable" applications.

In this case, you DEMAND that I give up my right to privacy by publishing the intimate details of my computer configuration on a public forum, with the expectation of your saying "AHAH there's the culprit - you are running XYZ and that is not permitted".

If you had asked nicely, I could have produced a thread snapshot of the utorrent process, copied it by hand, because my computer is frozen and I dare not try writing to the disk; then rebooting and transcribing the labourously copied values into an email.

That would have given you a clue about where the code was executing when the problems occured.

If you had asked REALLY nicely, I could have given you hints on where to look for the problem, such as uninitialized variables, dangling pointers, array-bounds checking, link-loops, incorrect initialization of data structures, misinterpretation of interface specifications, and a whole lot of other useful advice and opinions gleaned from my many years as a software developer.

Instead, you let your egos interfere by ignoring the fact that there is a problem that you are unable and unwilling to solve.

dar7yl

"we can't help you and/or fix the bug"

That's for sure. And I can't help you, especially after being insulted with scatalogical humor for expressing my opinion.

Really, there is no incentive for me to perform any other work than to revert to a previous version (which performed far better). You have made it plain that you have no intention of seriously investigating this problem.

IMHO, hijack logs are useless, except as an excuse on your part to deflect blame to other applications. Process explorer logs are infinitely more useful, but I have already stated that it is very difficult to produce them after my system has locked up. Core dumps would be useful as well, however that involves my doing work for you which would be uncompensated.

If you would like assistance in debugging your application, I can offer quite reasonable rates. If not, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for our brief correspondance, and remind you that I can be reached via email if you want to continue this discussion.

regards,

dar7yl

... hey DW at least he doesn't think BiTTorrent, Inc. is in-bed with the mafiaa. That's a plus right?

As far as your perception of the problem... if it were in the code EVERYONE would have a problem. I have had uT crash 4 times on me. Twice in 1.7.5 and twice in 1.8. I have not had problems running uT on my system. Sure it probably has something to do with me choosing to not have a bloatware "security suite" software on my system. I guess your initial response was relating to my quote about opinions. I would like to point out the anus is not scat...and your computer processing details are hardly intimate or private. If you're not willing to verify nothing is mucking with uTorrent you're free to use an older version of uT somewhere else.

Edit: Maybe you could take a cue from Drew42 who actually was able to expose some sort of incompatibility of uT with another program directly here...I don't know about you but I'm a uT power-user and it's rock solid and compact on resource usage as exhibited here.

Searching the internet will result that many p2p applications have the same problem with nVidia firewall. I am a member of the support team of another p2p software and believe me dear dar7yl that we do recommend our users just the same about nVidia software. Quality of that product doesn't meet the minimum usability criteria and should be avoided for anyone for any purpose. There are a lot better (free) application exist instead.

uT has problems with other applications, too and the support/dev team can be blamed for making not enough effort to solve / inform the user correctly about an incompatibility problem (in case of at least one widely used security software) but not with nV firewall. That is a simple crap.

Not enough effort to inform the users? Even after posting an entire FAQ section listing a bunch of known incompatible software along with possible solutions where they exist?

Not enough effort to solve problems when the devs are constantly sifting through crash dumps and trying to work out as many problems as they can? Workarounds can be implemented for problems with incompatible softwares (like many have been in µTorrent 1.8), but that's certainly not solving any problem. The solving would have to come from the conflicting software's end if the devs can't figure it out. They do put effort into fixing incompatibilities; claiming otherwise is ridiculous.

Dear Ultima, you are right and I'm afraid you misunderstood my words. This is certainly because of my poor English. Sorry. Let me try again.

uT has problems with other applications, too and the support/dev team can be blamed for making not enough effort to solve / inform the user correctly about the right solution for an incompatibility problem in case of a certain other widely used security software but its surely not the case with nV firewall. That is a simple crap.

There's only so much testing any of us can perform, especially if we generally don't have access to the incompatible softwares. What does that come down to?

- affected users posting any way around the problem if possible

- (maybe) trying to work around problems in µTorrent (it does happen occasionally)

- us telling the user to uninstall (because we can't investigate the issue ourselves)

So we're already trying anything we can to inform users. The devs even include useful information regarding detected possibilities for the reason behind crashes in the crash dialog for people to consider. I don't see how much more effort we can put into it, really.

At any rate, most of us will agree that nVidia's firewall sucks. That's all :)

The NVIDIA firewall is horrific. UDP traffic (from anything!) causes it to grow uncontrollably in memory usage, and since it hooks into other apps, it makes them look like they eat memory. It also likes to crash on multicore systems.

Don't blame ut when it's the firewall's fault. These same problems have been well known for YEARS, long before ut was even around.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have this huge memory leak too.

Does not matter how I set my cache preferences, the memory leak is huge, and it happens fast, using all available physical memory. That is 1 GB under winxp sp2.

I have a 10/10 Mbit DSL line and the problems start when traffic speed starts to rise.

I have a Gigabyte motherboard - Nvidia chipset, no Nvidia firewall. utorrent is version 1.7.7 (build 8179).

Switched from Bitlord to utorrent. There was no memory leak problem before the switch.

Now Windows sometimes crashes (blue screen) after 30 minutes or so, after using between 98-99% memory constantly. (normally 30% memory usage) Downloads/uploads are lightning fast until the end and CPU-usage is low. System is terribly slow though.

No other program than Firefox and Norton Antivirus 2006 are running. My system is completely stable when utorrent is not started and also with utorrent started but not downloading/uploading.

It is not utorrent that is eating memory. It is Windows that is eating memory when utorrent is running.

Any advice?
