Strange audio error when uTorrent active..then PC slows down

Hey folks what's up?

I have this strange problem with utorrent, which I have dealt with for over 6 months and I tried everything but it's still there.

In short, when utorrent is running and I play MP3s in any mediaplayer (wmp, classic, kmd, vlc) after a while it creates an error with the audio and makes music skip. Then after that all music and videos play while skipping and my PC is slow. I mean everything is slow, including copying files, etc.

I update drivers, re-install progz, scan, clean everything, yet the problem still is there. The only way to solve it is to re-install Windows (or use a backup image of the HD). System restore also doesn't help.

I am 100% sure it only happens when utorrent is active while playing music. I tested not playing music while utorrent is active and then I never have that problem, I tested that for weeks. I tried different verions of utorrent, and I always got that error after a while if played music while utorrent is active.

So what do you guys think?

Cheers

Andy

PS: I did a search on the forum and their problems were similar but still different, namely it slows down my PC permanently, even when utorrent is closed.

Here are the things you requested. The PC has no probs at the moment though and as you can see it runs very light the way I set things up.

I also know that when the problem occurs there are no extra services running or anything, everything just lags and audio/video skips, no matter what I do and I do know a fair amount about problem solving.

Uhm. This needs to be done when uT is running ;) The steps for the Process Explorer log are just below the HJT procedure in the How-To (link below).

It could be your defragger (i believe perfect disk does defragging in the "background")...

That is not a full HJT log. Please copy-paste the full log.

That it happens with different media players is odd. :/ I know some strange things happen on impacted systems when running WMP because it mucks with the networking subsystem... but it sounds like something is acting like Incompatible Software.

That is the full HJT log, minus a running utorrent. I'll post both logs again with running utorrent. And Perfectdisk isn't causing the problem, first all the services for that prog are disabled (I only start services when I want to defrag) and second I got that prog about 4 weeks ago, while the problem has been there around 6 months.

At the moment 1.3 , before that I mainly used 1.6.1 and also tried the latest 1.7.7 for a few weeks. All of them have the same problem.

I am thinking of trying other clients to see if it is just utorrent or something to do with clients in general.

Running a HP Pavilion zd8000 series, 1024MB RAM, 3.0Ghz Pentium®, XP Home, Conexant AMC audio, x600 128mb videocard.

Cheers.

If it was drivers then a re-install of Windows and Notebook DVD would solve it though, right? Done that many times over the months. Then opened utorrent, let music play for a while and the same lagging/skipping problem arose which forced me to re-install Windows/use backup image of fresh install.

Highly unlikely but seemingly the only cause... utorrent is not compatible with the driver combo I have....? So it doesn't matter what I do or how, it will cause this error?

Cheers.

  • 3 months later...

I'm having the same issue as the OP and it is driving me nuts. I have even purchased a sound card instead of using onboard/motherboard audio but it didn't help with my issues.

It isn't just utorrent but anytime I am using "high" bandwidth like changing new web pages.

....HELP please.

spoo,

Go through the 1st link in my signature...the troubleshooting may not be quick, but it generally thorough.

The 2nd link is unlikely to help...but it doesn't hurt to make sure your settings match up with what your connection's upload speed max.

That's generally a sign that your hard drive controllers have lapsed into PIO mode. The only fix is to uninstall your IDE and SATA controllers in the device manager, then reboot.

If it happens again and again, it's a sign that your drives are starting to fail.

You can see which one in particular changed transfer modes by checking the advanced properties for the controllers.
