paintball9 Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 So I have a rather generic speed problem that I have narrowed down to be related to uTP. The reason I have come to that conclusion is that it only occurs on uTorrents 1.8.3 and up.My problem is to do with any peers using uTP, they will connect upload to me at full speed and after as little as 30 seconds (while still having 20+ reqs i might add) will suddenly slowdown to less than a kb/s and just disconnect. After 15 or so minutes this process will repeat. This only occurs on connections using uTP, if i'm connected to a transmission client for instance it doesn't appear to happen. So you can see how this might be a problem seeing as the majority of peers use uTorrent. My guess is that uTP is a little over zealous in detecting bandwidth congestion. My connection isn't great 5670 down, 512 up. But i can still sustain 50KB's up before i see negative effects. And I do use bandwidth limiting to obtain this. I am unaware of any way of setting uTP to throttle less but it would be nice if that were available.I have temporarily solved the problem by downgrading to 1.8.1 but obviously this is not ideal, I really like the direction you guys are going with the idea bank and labs, but it kind of sucks that i can't use them anyways due to this underlying problem.I have tried searching for this problem but just way too many people posting way too little information to be helpful searching.I've already followed the guides and I have a really nice setup in 1.8.1 So I guess I would just like this fixed so I can continue using uTorrent. I would hate for this to be the reason I switch to another client, especially since this is by far the best one out there. Also, I have yet to do a bug report, I can do so upon suggestion, I just didn't feel like doing a whole bunch of checks right now. If the Mods feel this should be a bug rather than a speed problem I will certainly it make one.
DreadWingKnight Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 Well, considering how little actual information you've provided, we can't see where the actual problem is.
paintball9 Posted June 11, 2010 Author Report Posted June 11, 2010 What would you like me to give then. I couldn't think of any more relevant information. It occurs with every uTP peer connected. Which also means that each of those peers and myself must be using 1.8.3 or above for it to occur. It happens on every torrent all the time. This is not a problem that causes errors and as such there are no error logs to provide. Please be more specific with what information is required if you are going to ask for more.

paintball9 Posted June 11, 2010 Author Report Posted June 11, 2010 Thats gonna take a little while, i'll post back on here tomorrow if i don't finish it tonight.
paintball9 Posted June 13, 2010 Author Report Posted June 13, 2010 So today as I was going through the list of stuff you asked for I noticed that all my trackers were stuck on updating, mostly private. 3 different trackers on about 12 torrents. Seems to be the same problem as listed here http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=59753&p=1 I'm can't see any reason why it would be related but thought it might be good to mention anyways. A simple program restart fixed it but from the sound of that post it will be back and there had been no true fix listed and the post was pretty old.Anyways back to what you wanted to know.I have a GBlan setup from all of my computers. going into a generic 5port switch (no os) from there I use a WRT160N Wireless router that is using PPPoE to connect through a DSL Modem (Speedstream) in bridge mode.I have the Wireless router setup to port-forward all BT traffic and am connectable, (Speed guide check confirmed it)Should probably mention that I have had this problem in other enviroments as well. the other place consisted of a WRT54G routing to a IPCOP proxy with filtering and authentication disabled. Connections were pool cached however at around 46KB/s per user.As for internet security the router has a port based restriction. I do NOT run any sort of AV or true Firewall on my computer. PeerBlock (new peerguardian) is all. and that blocks connections before they start not once transfer begins. Windows defender has been removed as has the whole windows security suite. All of that software is crap anyways.I'm running Win 7 64 bit, but i've also had this issue on 32-bit win 7 and both architectures of vista. Network status light is green. I would give you a list of my current settings for uTorrent, but as I have said before I am using 1.8.1 to avoid the issue. From that I can see no reason why the current settings would be relevant. I have altered a lot of settings in this version and it works good, but the versions (1.8.3, 2.0 - 2.0.2) that I had the problems on were all relatively clean installs. From what I can remember the settings were these. Protocol encryption forced and legacy disabled. 15 connections per torrent, 4 upload slots. 200 connections global.I've followed the guide listed here http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992Results of the Process explorer listProcess PID CPU Private Bytes Working Set Description Company Name Virtual SizeSystem Idle Process 0 94.69 0 K 24 K 0 K Interrupts n/a 0.39 0 K 0 K Hardware Interrupts 0 K DPCs n/a 0.78 0 K 0 K Deferred Procedure Calls 0 K System 4 0.39 112 K 1,460 K 4,988 K smss.exe 340 528 K 260 K Windows Session Manager Microsoft Corporation 5,056 Kcsrss.exe 452 2,196 K 1,992 K Client Server Runtime Process Microsoft Corporation 47,964 Kwininit.exe 516 1,676 K 716 K Windows Start-Up Application Microsoft Corporation 48,388 K services.exe 572 5,564 K 5,292 K Services and Controller app Microsoft Corporation 43,820 K svchost.exe 740 5,604 K 5,300 K Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporation 52,404 K svchost.exe 832 6,864 K 6,804 K Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporation 47,564 K svchost.exe 920 19,816 K 13,180 K Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporation 82,744 K audiodg.exe 5644 15,900 K 15,692 K Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation Microsoft Corporation 52,504 K svchost.exe 976 146,964 K 139,076 K Host Process for Windows Services Microsoft Corporation 329,116 K WUDFHost.exe 1100 2,784 K 840 K Windows Driver Foundation - DreadWingKnight Posted June 13, 2010 Report Posted June 13, 2010 Does the problem persist with peerblock not running/not installed?I would give you a list of my current settings for uTorrent, but as I have said before I am using 1.8.1 to avoid the issue. From that I can see no reason why the current settings would be relevant.Considering the differences in versions, and the fact that bad settings are becoming more and more likely to cause problems, upgrade and get the settings.
paintball9 Posted June 13, 2010 Author Report Posted June 13, 2010 Yes, It exists on multiple scenarios. I know my friend also has the problem and he does not use peerblock. I will ask him what his setup is. If I remember right it consisted of kaspersky or nod32, no firewall and a similar internet connection. But i don't think he had anything port forwarded.I'll upgrade to the newest version tonight and give it a try. I probably should have reported this back when i was using the issue that for sure had the problem.
paintball9 Posted July 10, 2010 Author Report Posted July 10, 2010 Alright so I finally got some free time to try the new version out and sure enough it's still a problem. I updated from 1.8.1 to 2.0.3 build 20501. Before the update I had torrents seeding at almost 35k/s and afterwards it reconnects to those peers but has an absolutely pathetic speed. Its been sitting for about 10 minutes now. I'm one of 3 seeders on the torrents in question the peer is using 2.0.2. and thus utp. It took almost 6 minutes to start any transfer to this peer, (previous version was almost instant) and now it only transfers at about 12 (obviously no where near my max, I have no torrents downloading so it shouldn't be able to detect any congestion or need to throttle down.Hopefully you can see this issue at hand here, With the over zealous control it has over my transfer speed I have no way to achieve any reasonable ratio. If we can't figure this out I will have no choice but to revert.Edit - And its gotten even worse, in 6 hours that i've been gone, its dropped from a sad speed of 12kb/s down to an absolutely pathetic one of 2, total including overhead for the 8 peers i'm connected to, I should be able to do at least 6 or 7 each but I can't even seem to do that for one.I've never seen anything this bad in the previous versions. And turning off uTP makes it jump almost instantly up to 20, still nothing like it was before but still an obvious sign that something is horribly wrong with the setup.
Switeck Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 So today as I was going through the list of stuff you asked for I noticed that all my trackers were stuck on updating, mostly private. 3 different trackers on about 12 torrents.Did you check windows event manager for 4226 errors? While that wouldn't apply to the uTP connections themselves, the trackers probably use TCP. (unless they say udp:// )
paintball9 Posted July 12, 2010 Author Report Posted July 12, 2010 No I didn't, I havn't had that problem since though, just restarted uTorrent and it went away (and I was using 1.8.1 when that happened as well so no uTP)
Switeck Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 I'd expect 4226 errors to be "worse" if not using uTP.
paintball9 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 Thing is though, without uTP I actually have a transfer speed, Errors or not it works. When uTP is on I have nothing. It totally bottoms out whatever bandwidth I have.As far as that issue you just quoted me on, I'm pretty sure now that its un-related. Just thought I'd mention it in case someone recognized the symptoms. Seems to have been a one time thing. Every tracker in my list of torrents was updating at the same time and they would never finish. After the restart it hasn't happened since.Oh and I checked I havn't ever had a 4226 error as long as I've had this OS running. There was a 4228 a couple months back but it was a one time thing.
Switeck Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Try raising uTP's target delay time from 100ms all the way to 1000ms to see if uTorrent's speeds improve. If so, I wouldn't recommend leaving them that way all the time because that means uTorrent will be adding about 1000ms to your pingtimes.
paintball9 Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 Well the overall speed seems to be used now with the target delay up. However it doesn't want to stay consistent on each connection (each torrent) one will run at 60% of my bandwidth then all of a sudden it will drop to 1kb/s and a different one will jump up. It seems to be unable to find a middle ground. it slows down connections to raise up another one but forgets to balance them.Overall this is a huge improvement but I would still like it to be steady. Thanks for the help, if you have any more ideas on how to keep it from fluctuating I'd be happy to try them out.
rafi Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 I'd try 2.03 latest beta + set a download speed limit right below my connection's cap.
Greg Hazel Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 This is the sort of behavior I would expect if for some reason the MTU is exceeded by uTorrent. Can you do a Wireshark capture of the traffic, specifically around the time that the rate drops?
paintball9 Posted July 19, 2010 Author Report Posted July 19, 2010 I've got a lot of stuff going (transfers and such) that need to finish but when I've got the connection free I'll do a capture, As for rafi's post, i'm already running 2.03 beta (build 20501) and my speed limit is at 40 atm, right below where it starts having a negative effect on the network, Technically I should be able to set around 60 but for some reason it just kills my download (down to 50 or less from 650)
rafi Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 So Greg's guess might have been correct. You should replace 20501 with the latest beta (my sig). 501 had an issue where the devs have made a mistake and have set the IP DF flag to NOT FRAGMENT packets bigger than your MTU, and did not do proper PMTU discovery at the same time. They plan to do it right in the next 2.04 release...
paintball9 Posted July 19, 2010 Author Report Posted July 19, 2010 Still havn't gotten a chance to do so but I will update when I do it. Not sure if you remember my earlier posts but I've been having this problem since 1.8.3 its not a new thing and it only happened with utp connections. If the peers were all transmission for instance the torrent kept its speed fine.
paintball9 Posted July 24, 2010 Author Report Posted July 24, 2010 Alright, So I went to do do the upgrade and wireshark recording, but after I upgraded (20663 was the newest one on the main page listed as beta) I couldn't replicate the issue, I reset the target delay time to 100ms and turned uTP back on. The overhead was incredibly stable, 1.3 per 40 as opposed to 8 per 40. There was actually an improvement with uTP over normal. It connected faster and jumped right up to speed. Its been going for almost half an hour with no noticeable issues so far. I don't know what you guys did but its working great. Here's the screen shot you asked for I'll keep an eye on it but its looking really good, thanks for the help everyone. I'll pass on this version to everyone that was having the problem before.Oh I just noticed the 683 beta in your sig rafi, I'll just stick with this one for now seeing as its working for the time being.
rafi Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 This was exactly the issue 2.03 aimed at - better upload overhead (using larger packets)... When people will upgrade in the "wild", I expect download overhead to improve as well. btw, latest stable builds were 2.03/20664, and 20683 . Dunno about 20663...
paintball9 Posted July 24, 2010 Author Report Posted July 24, 2010 Well, not sure where the 664 is from, everything i've seen says 663,As for download i'll have to check that one as I go, I don't have anything downloading atm but the overhead for that seemed to move with the upload one.
Switeck Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 The overhead was incredibly stable, 1.3 per 40 as opposed to 8 per 40. There was actually an improvement with uTP over normal.Your screenshot may not be a fair example, because it seems you have *VERY* few connected peers.
