Ghost21
Why doesn't the "Check for updates" check for beta updates? It would be nice to be informed of new betas. Instead of updating, it should open the changelog for users to review first. Then they can choose whether or not to test the beta out.
boo
because beta updates isn't really 100% public + beta can have various problems that needs to be fixed and it wouldn't be so good if every µTorrent got the beta of it had somoe serious problem. Ghost21
That's why I said it wouldn't need to update itself. Just notify the user of a new version, and maybe bring them to the changelog. In other words, it wouldn't update, just notify the availability of a new beta version.Or maybe this could be implemented only in betas so that only beta users get notified. Stable users would get notified about new stable releases.
hofshi
not a bad idea.
Sanchez
I wouldn't like it, would seem like an annoying intrusive message. Also, I'm moving this to feature requests.
hofshi
maybe if you set it to show the message only when you select Help-->check for updates
splintax
Bad idea. The people who want betas won't be arsed to manually click the button (you might as well manually check the site, IMO), if you do the above, and the people who aren't interested or shouldn't be using the betas in the first place would stumble across it...I suggest an advanced option, autoupdate_check_beta, or something, that includes betas when doing the regular checking routine. Ghost21
Like I said, it could be implemented in beta only. So beta users would know when a new version is out and can read the changelog and try out the beta. The whole idea of beta testing is to test new releases as it comes out.Or implement this also in stable but leave the normal users out of this by using an advanced option like what splintax said. So that when a stable version is released, those interested in the next beta testing would still be notified by new releases.
hofshi
Exactly. Whoever wants to know about a new beta will find out about it anyway. This will just make it more convenient.
SledgeDG
just subscribe to the beta ThreadSo you get an email everytime, Firon announces a new build http://forum.utorrent.com/misc.php?subscribe=2971that's fast , that's easy and it doesn't require a change in program codewhat more could one ask for :D-DG
Ghost21
Well, that's one way but people don't really check their mails often. However, people do keep their BT client running 24/7. Considering that µTorrent in still developing, the number of beta builds releases is quite frequent. With people running µTorrent most of the time of the day (and night), auto-notification is better IMHO.
ICleolion
I dont think this is needed. If you're really interested in being a public beta tester then you will check the forums anyway, or you will have signed upto the thread SledgeDG pointed out. Ghost21
If the convenience can be provided to stable users, there's no reason it couldn't be for beta testers.
Firon
Because beta testers should be people that are actually active here (or on IRC) and give feedback. If it was through auto-update, most people wouldn't give feedback. Want a notification? winMX_67
Yeah, but it would be nice to have an auto-update. If there was a problem I wouls still report it on the forum.
Ghost21
It wouldn't necessarily be auto-update. It could be auto-notification. So you can read the changelog or browse through the forum for any new reported bugs. If you are beta-testing, you would have to come here anyway to review bugs repoted by others and report your own bug if you've found any. What else would a beta-tester do after finding a bug? Sit on it and wait for the next beta? Nope. They would come to the forums. To look for possible workarounds or see whether others had found the same bug. If not, they can make a bug report themselves.
Firon
http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=2971 <- auto-notification
Ultima
Heh Ghost21, it seems like you responded to your own post... Your explanation is the perfect reason why auto-update or auto-notification shouldn't be needed. Since one is going to be actively checking the forums if they're beta testing, it would be more trouble to change the server code and whatnot for little to no benefit.
