3r1c
Well Microsoft removed the half-open limits in windows in vista sp2 and windows 7.And this bug is half-open related.Maybe whatever MS did to remove the limit, means that uTorrent's own limit cannot calculate it properly now.But I did have this problem on vista sp1 (which I think still has the windows half-open limit) before I upgraded to windows 7 and it started happening right after a uTorrent update not a windows update. Ghis1964
I'm still on that thing yeah.Recommended setting sounds to me like default settings. Isn't it? yes.... so that solution has been long gone and looks to me like a kind of scape goat or a waste of time just mentioning it. Yeah I know there's some young devils beginners that would mess with those setting (as I did back when), its been tried, its been proven useless to modify; the gain is what... .00001%.As for sequential, what is that? w--king the client;) Now I can't see the pleasure anyone would have at stopping... starting... stopping... starting on and on any torrent. Push play, only once is enough, then when done its done. Cooking a rib-steak sequentially does also destroys a good piece of meat.As I mention earlier last week, I don't believe it is a "µTorrent" bug. (yeah I also said and thought it was a windows bug, which now I can see is not). And I have tried the last five version (no not all at once) I did each install "clean". Clean means deleting each key, folder and all with even the firewall rules.(yeah I had the time). Even more, Deluge started to do the same, as a tracker would not reply, it changed tracker (cause deluge uses one tracker at atime it seems, so it switch its primary tracker when needed, but I don't know that for sure, it looks as if it switches)The problem "looks to me" as a "region" and/or "ISP" problem. If not, then, why utorrent is getting replies on one tracker while non with an other? If it were a client bug, it would either get, none at all, or, all ok. Maybe people who have proxies are fine. I don't have those, got no bread to waste on that. Also, those non-working/now-working, (this looks like sequence hey) , trackers recently had legal and/or hackers issues. So I'm starting to think that we're scavenging the wrong bone as this lingers on.Got to eat now, my steak is getting cold;)Peace
Maggot666PL
I'm getting more and more confident about the cause of the problem - another symptom: when a SSL-tracker goes down, as I mentioned before (it just happened again, I'm now un-clogging uT), half-open connections just keep stacking up till they reach the set limit. It does NOT happen with non-encrypted trackers.
Switeck
Enable DEBUG column in the torrents window (top window)...the 1st number is how many half open connections are active for each particular torrent, the 2nd number is how many additional upload slots are allowed past normal max, and the 3rd number is max (theoretically) allowed upload slots for that torrent based on upload speed max and conditions. Chouonsoku
I've been noticing similar problems to others on here. I'm running uTorrent 1.8.4 and all of my trackers are getting stuck on "Updating" most of the time. The trackers are all SSL encrypted. The net.max_halfopen workaround worked for me.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 4:48:41 AM, on 9/13/2009Platform: Unknown Windows (WinNT 6.01.3504)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.7600.16385)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\mIRC\mirc.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\DesktopCoral\DesktopCoral.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\uTorrent\uTorrent.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR1 - Ghis1964
"what's exactly the net.max_halfopen workaround? set it to 0 or 4?"yeah.... cause for now I don't yet see what it does or if this does anything, at all.default is 8 on µT 1.8.4, and I've tried 0, and also 100. But, where does the action take place? I mean, where is the big earthquake?
Chouonsoku
It's just a workaround from earlier in the thread. I set it to 64 for mine and trackers started updating pretty soon after that.
3r1c
Ghis1964, if you have trackers that are always working, and some that are never working, then yeah those trackers are probably down. This is nothing to do with the problems we are having here. Its not a tracker/isp problem, and the trackers that I am using are private trackers which are accessible by browser, and work after changing the half-open setting.Changing a setting on my PC that magically makes the problem go away pretty much rules out that the problem is with the tracker or ISP.From reading so far everyone in here has the following.1. Trackers stop updating after uTorrent has been running a while.2. Using at least some SSL trackers.3. Have a lot of half-open connections in Help/Show Statistics.4. Increasing net.max_halfopen immediately makes all frozen trackers active again (although given enough time, it will eventually reach whatever you increased it to, so not a permanent solution). Chouonsoku
I've also noticed that uTorrent rarely closes anymore when I tell it to. The process is usually there after exiting, and I have to go in and end the process manually before I can run the program again or else the processes just build up. Ghis1964
same here, I thought this issue was over,,, until this morning. µT asked for update and installed as usual. Again, the tray icon wouldn't appear. As I keep task manager always open and a must with vista's unresponsiveness, I shut µT down. The only pain left is to wait for µT to re-check all its dl after re-starting it. This is getting really old stuff now. Patience is a blessing for those who have it. I have it, but not always on a 24/7 basis;)Now, maybe related or not, does anybody went to windows's installed program list? I don't often go, by having Revo's un-installer to take care of un-installing apps, but I went there after some Minefield trouble-shootings and saw µT "double" installed. After un-installing one the other followed leaving an icon that as no figure on it, and came back as a "one-only" installed apps after re-installing. From here, I'll just wait again to see if everything goes back to normal, and from time to time giving a feed-back hoping to help anyone help me back.Peace

Maggot666PL
It'll be tough, since many of those trackers are private and invitation only.I've got some observations from the past days:- When a tracker goes offline (returns timeout responses and "A connnection couldn't be established" ones), the half-open connections seen in About->Stats keep climbing.- When I had just one such torrent started it climbed to about 30 (more like "by 30" -> the lowest point was at about 20-something, highest - a bit over 50), then dropped rapidly (just like it was maxing out some sort of a limit). Cycle was repeating itself.- With more torrents I was observing slow, but constant growth (before the program's reset it got to around 1700 half-open connections). Not once I've seen a significant drop, but I also haven't go enough time to see if it would reach a state of equilibrium.- In the debug column for the "broken" tracker one connections pops up while announcing, then immediately vanishes. The result is uT showing 0|0|* for all of them, all the time.- The half-opens from debug columns often do not add up to the count from the "Stats" screen.Hope it helps at least a bit. again, I am happy to say that reverting to 1.8.2 and using the 3r1c "workaround" has fixed the issues for myself... not a scientific conclusion perhaps but i am seeding without problems.Hope the problem gets sorted soon.cheers. Richard Choi
I am trying to reproduce the issue. Can we definitively say that it occurs on 1.8.4 XP SP3 if you just run a lot of torrents from HTTPS trackers?
Maggot666PL
A lot of torrents and a low (default 8 or similar) net.max.halfopen. Also there is a problem with offline (time-outing rather than 404) https trackers (as I wrote few times already).
3r1c
I believe I have found another cause. It happens (at least more often) if the connection to the https tracker fails or times out.Yesterday my ISP was having problems, alot of packet loss, and usually had to retry a few times to use any website, and the stuck half-open connections in uTorrent shot up rapidly.uTorrent now shows 0 TCP connecting and 466 half-open and it never drops below that.
