µTorrent 2.0 released

Recommended Posts

Release Notes:

[ul][li]uTP has been improved significantly since 1.8.5, with many bugs fixed and performance improvements. It can be found in the preferences as "Enable bandwidth management" (but don't worry, bandwidth caps are still under your control!)

[/li][li]We've added UDP tracker support!

[/li][li]The setup dialog has been overhauled to make it much easier to use and with a built-in speed test. More presets were added and it automatically scales settings for high-upload connections.

[/li][li]A new transfer cap feature has been added to track bandwidth usage, along with graphs to show your usage.

[/li][/ul]

Feature Overview:

uTP is an alternative communication method for BitTorrent traffic that allows the client to automatically regulate its bandwidth usage to avoid adversely impacting your internet connection. This will allow you or other users on the network to download their torrents but still allow others on the network to function with little difference. This does not require any additional setup.

In addition, uTP in this version has added its own form of STUN, a method of getting incoming connections without direct connectivity to the Internet. This allows µTorrent to punch holes through routers and firewalls to increase connectivity and improve speeds. It is even possible to connect two firewalled peers through uTP's NAT traversal feature.

More details on uTP

UDP trackers are a different protocol for tracker communication that uses significantly less processing power on the tracker end. It's important for us to support this because trackers have limited resources, so this should allow them to support many more users with their current hardware and not crash under the load.

The transfer cap settings were added in response to various users who have ISP-mandated caps on how much data they can download/upload in a month. Now you can track your usage in MB (with a handy graph to visualize it) and even configure µTorrent to stop torrenting once the limits are exceeded. Currently, you can configure the time interval, the data cap and whether it should stop based on only download, upload, or both combined.

As a privacy notice, this traffic data is not sent back to us or anyone.

Not sure when this began occuring, but I just downloaded something via WebUI and it put it in My Documents\Downloads when I'm sure the previous behavior was to place it in the "Put new downloads in.." folder even when that option was unchecked (which it is). Is that WebUI-side or on the backend, and if the latter, any chance of getting that back?

On a separate note, the new toolbar and tstatus look pretty good, though the tstatus arrows feel a bit thin (all of them), and the tabs leave a little something to be desired and feel mismatched. Maybe I just had my hopes set on savaden's µniversal v2 as the new default though. :P Looks crazy professional.

And another thing, that behavior you said was intentional where the magnet URI association button remains ungreyed now results in uTorrent asking me to reassociate every time it starts.

P.P.S. The discrepency on the Setup Guide I reported in the beta thread is odd too.. I use the preset for 1 mbit and Save & Close, and then I reopen the dialog and it has my current settings pegged as "737.28 kbit/s" ..?

I want my old-default icons back  Can you at least post instructions and download link on the first post on how to get (download) and use the download to replace them back ?

Thank you for your consideration

edit:

and if you ask me -

0. replacing the "standard" start('play'/DL)-pause-stop with a newly invented download button ? strange...

1. it's a VERY BAD choice of artwork to use two icons - similar in shape that differ only slightly in color - the "active/inactive" ones. You should mind also the color-blind people... :(

2. Making the stop icon differently shaped then the "stop" button on the tool bar - doesn't make the usability any easier

3. the "disabled" RSS feeds' icon - is now very incompatible (visually) with the "active/errored" RSS icons for feeds.

4. and purple queuing arrows-buttons ? also lookalike to the download button ? ... what can I say ...

just my 2 cents...

more:

... and at last... speed limiters seem to work fine... :)

Two more issues:

1. All UDP trackers I tried - are coming with "connection timed out" status

2. the speed/setup "guide" - still suffer from the same issue that I've noted about a 100 times allready... So I will say nothing now, and you just tell me if you want the user to configure the UL limit per the following recommendation (with a perfectly good UL speed measurement):

57998573.png

... and I think you know what should be set in the UL limit... a simple # calculated by x60-70% factor

Paris, Athens, Amsterdam #1, Los Angeles, Mountain View, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, both New York, and Dallas test locations are not connecting (or at least not accepting connections from my IP).

I have no IP blocking software activated, and my only firewall is on my router. To my knowledge, that is not blocking those connections either. The exact error for all locations is "Connection failed error: A request to send or receive data was disallowed because the socket is not connected and (when sending on a datagram socket using a sendto call) no address was supplied. (10057)"

I'm not experiencing slow download anymore yeah! can't wait to see the swarms using uTorrent 2.0 and uTP, hoping that it will not throttle my ISP using such protocol :D and to speed up my download speed

I cannot connect to my WebUI outside of my LAN.

When I try to connect to it from within it, using internal IP, everything works ok, but when I try to connect, say, from work, it just keeps asking for login/password perpetually.

This replicates in every browser that I have. Cleaning cache/cookies make no difference. Deleting WebUI.zip doesn't help either.

My setup is this: DSL modem configured as router set with DMZ rule to forward all traffic to my PC. All internal IPs are static.

I can also confirm that tstatus.bmp isn't being loaded. Seems the default ones are loaded up instead. Other than that.. everything going good so far! Nice build! :D

clumba: it seems OK to me. Seeding seed of ~700K causes 5% overhead in download speed == ~35K . In V 2.0 you can see that as a default (cause net.calc_overhead is set to true as default) . In V 1.8.5 you could have seen that only if you set the net.calc_overhead to true manually. If you run an external tool, such as Netmeter, it will be apparent to you in all versions.
