µTorrent 3.4 RC

This client is in the very early stages but the dev is open for suggestions....http://bit.ly/1eycCIL

The key on ANY alternate client is the ability to seemlessly import all of the resume.dat data - not to have to set anything manually (like qbittorrent is currently stuck with). Looking through the forum posts, news, etc, I didn't see anything that relates to that aspect.

Been testing that client.

imports running jobs flawlessly

Memory footprint 5% smaller than uTorrent, but ~15% larger than qBittorrent

My guess some of it is from the Python (pyd) files.

It's the Python 3.3 core that it installs locally and the wxWidgets DLL that make up much of the space.

Import of uT resume.dat?!!!! With no manual selection of the destination folders?

If that's the case, I'l install and try it out immediately! :)

Import of uT resume.dat?!!!!
Not of resume.dat directly, but pointing the client to the existing payload location and dropping the .torrent files into the auto load folder, loads and rechecks the existing jobs with no problems at all.

ADDED:

If you have "append !ut" checked and partial files in the payload, turn it off first.

That method won't work for me - I can't pick out the specific ~700 torrent files, and the folder locations are spread over several drives in numerous locations.

Impossible to do in that manner.

Any client *MUST*, no ifs, ands, or buts, be able to *directly* import the resume.dat file data (for me).

Forget it... Wouldn't happen .... :P

Never say never - *everything* can be done - it's just a matter of the right person working on it. Simple as that. QBT is already quite close to the solution.

@AdamK - thanks for the nice Yule present :) (here's hoping RC3 is the "lucky 3")

@rafi - do you know that there are a lot of (what appear to be) "your system-specific" folder locations embedded in your "Best Settings" dat? ex, D:\Program Files\uTorrent\uT 3.3 ; H:\temp\downloads\BitTorrent , etc ....

It *might* be better to simply provide a simple list of all the settings (even in a txt file), or a batch of screenshots (jmho)

One thing I just noticed (and it's probably been there for a while), is that when adding a torrent where files already exist, the folder name does not change to the navigated folder - meaning that the whole path appears in the SAVE IN, while the NAME remains whatever is in the torrent - therefore, without cut&pasting the actual folder name from the SAVE IN to the NAME boxes, it will create another subfolder - even if CREATE SUBFOLDER is unchecked, the NAME field is still populated.

If (and I haven't tested it) un-checking the CREATE SUBFOLDER option does *not* create a folder with the NAME value, then (imho) the NAME field should be made BLANK when the box is un-checked.

Hmm.. possibly. Just means that they were actually tested... I'll see what I can do... Probably leave them blank (default)

There is a positive angel here you know, this way the user is notified on errors, and remembers those need to be set ... ;)

List of settings? Used to be so, but was more difficult to use.

Haven't been back here in a long time because I'd gotten tired of waiting for any forward development on the torrent client part of uTorrent. Specifically, I've been waiting for "append torrent label" to be re-added as a directory feature before I can go back to updating my uTorrent client. I grabbed this current RC version to see if it's been re-implemented. Fresh Install on a test machine (I've finally learned to test things BEFORE I mess up my torrent box), first run, I get a screen full of what I guess are ads, two of which have completely naked chicks in them. WTF Assholes, I have kids at home that don't need to see your porn.

MY suggestions to your company:

Throw the last couple YEARS of "developement" in the trash. Stop trying to be a media player, a social network, a toolbar installer, and whatever else, and focus on developing a TORRENT CLIENT. I could care less about streaming ads, I know you have to keep the programmers fed. But you have to add features that someone who uses torrents from multiple servers can actually use, like label based limiting, ratios, and directory sorting. Not that I think any of that will actually happen at this point, or that anyone at the company will even read this. So, peace out.

@ezcry4t3d - you echo the sentiments of SO many users ...... uT needs to get back to what they USED to be.

uT - you want to have all your other "features"? Fine - make them SEPARATE!!!!! Don't *FORCE* them on your user base - that is what is alienating them (or at the least, pissing people off!) Make them available for the people who WANT them. STOP trying to be everything in one bundle (look where that got Vuze!)

Use some freaking COMMON SENSE!

You know, it appears, from the outside, that their is either a) an ineffective project manager, B) NO project manager, c) programmers who don't speak to each other and don't know what the others are doing (otherwise there wouldn't be so much trampling going on - 1 thing fixed, 2 things broken), or a combination of the above.

I don't fault programmers (in general) - they are *usually* competent and program what they are instructed to - I fault those who are charged with managing the project. (And yes, I *have* been professionally involved in major projects)

- Change: Write more aggressively when coalesced pieces exist in cache

A long awaited fix. Definitely in the right direction - avoid filling up the cache.

Sadly, at ~10MB/sec, with a multi-file torrent - it seems to need more aggressiveness...

Maybe this has something to do with it? Writing twice as much to cache as required (compare to <=3.3.2) ?

Don't be naive... like you were born yesterday... The user-base is the means to more income.

The facts of life are - people (any company, BT included) want to make money. Splitting the client will not achieve that.

Make them available for the people who WANT them

The balance of having it both ways - with and w/o ads has already been achieved - we can disable/remove all those ads. People should try to learn to live with that. Including you... ;)

@rafi - my point is that the people who WANT those things are already *paying* for them in the PLUS version - if they did not include them in the free version, then those who wanted them would *pay* for them. Including them for free does ZERO to increase any profits.

If they, like you, actually think that, then you all need to take some business economics classes.

An NO - *no one* has to "learn to live" with something they don't like - they may *put up* with it until something better comes along, but those are two entirely different things. And do not doubt that something better WILL come along - it always will - that is the nature of progress, one product/service will always be outdone by the next in line.

Those companies who cannot (or will not) adapt to their user base, will a) lose the user base, and B) go out of business.

Advanced>Set Download Location... doesn't move a folder if is name contain a '

e.g. "David Mitchell - L'atlante delle nuvole"

In build 30428 the counters on sidebar are ok' date=' but on the main window not all files are showed.

Thanks - I just accepted a patch for that a few hours ago. That fix will be out today.

Still doesn't work in build 30444

Wrong "concept"...
