moogly
@lostinspace: Disk cache? I've never seen µTorrent use more than 20MB here (right now, it's using only 9MB for me).On Vista SP1 (and SP2 since today ), I'm frequently above 20 MB up to 30 MB.EDIT: with stable 1.8.2 of course. lostinspace
Thank you all (5618, jewelisheaven, Ultima) for telling me that, i knew that in the old days utorrent used a really small footprint. I have disk cache enabled but anyway seems weird to me that it jumps in that hughe blocks and with no torrent added or subtracted that jumped 80M up. @jewelisheavendiskio.sparse_files is default OFFThank you for that. i really dont mess with that optimisations ... it's now "true" on 1.8.0 so this should be set "false" for vista? Could you please say what kind of mess was that option doing on vista. and is this only if vista is the machine where the files are stored. cause i usually download to network machine. Or it could happen just if host os where utorrent is running is vista. thanks@UltimaI know that pre-allocation of files doesnt have anything with my memory usage. But it's more convenient for me if the files are dynamically allocated.
jewelisheaven
I wouldn't call sparse files BROKEN, however when files have > 65534 chunks of sparse data, the OS was breaking. This is of course very unlikely in small files, but when you get into the multi-gigabyte files it becomes more of an issue. So, to note, files are only made sparse on creation. So, turn it ON make new files.
Ultima
Vista's handling of sparse files is so poor that (IINM) it could effectively cause the entire OS to be unable to use the filesystem in certain situations. It could happen with anything, but because of the way BitTorrent works with regards to disk writes, it easily occurred with µTorrent. I don't know if it causes problems with the filesystem itself, but I suspect not (I think it may have been a Vista-specific limitation).
arvid
@jewelisheaven: thanks. This was a silly regression, I've made sure to comment it properly in the code now so that we won't make this mistake again. Will be fixed in the next refresh. Ultima
So you see, crash dumps aren't always useful without context -- process logs et al. In the case of your crashes, I see at least one suspicious file hooked as a module: LGMSGHK.DLL, whatever that is. I'm not saying that's definitely the cause of the crash, but the point is that including a bit of context is more helpful than without. So again, process logs. hermanm
> So you see, crash dumps aren't always useful without contextAre you saying my crash dump is not useful?> LGMSGHK.DLLIts a DLL Logitech Scroll Mouse.> I'm not saying that's definitely the cause of the crashThe DLL has been around for as long as I've been using µTorrent. Its never been a problem before.I'm not including a process log unless a BT developer asks me to send it by e-mail.
DreadWingKnight
Then you're not getting your issue troubleshot. If there's an issue with interaction caused by a 3rd party application injecting itself, not only will the hijackthis/process explorer logs reveal it, others with the same issue can see it. hermanm
Why are you assuming that its a 3rd party application issue. I hate it when µTorrent forum users get all defensive about µTorrent.

jewelisheaven
So the spurts of Vista crashes was a regression? Is it Vista-based or Vista-specific. . . All the people running Win7, do we tell them to update?
Ultima
@hermanm: And we hate it when users think we're getting defensive, and try to turn everything into politics. Nowhere did we say there was not a problem with µTorrent. It's called narrowing the possibilities down, and is standard troubleshooting procedure. But whatever, if you're going to refuse, we won't bother to push either.

zhong881209
restart the computer is the easiest way to stop many unusual thing, but it is better to submit any crash dumps and process log to the developer to avoid any similar problems to happen again. lysp
I have an issue with 15562 also, however mine was not crashing.I'm running Server 2008 x64.After updating i could start the program fine, but all the trackers were stuck on "updating..." state. Also DHT was stuck on the connection state. The download/upload speeds were all 0.0k/s and it would just sit there doing nothing. After downgrading back to 15520 everything worked fine again.
