Hideous ?

That's a bit rude, don't u think.?

After all, it's a beta. The focus has to be on functionality at that stage.

I'm sure that, once the code is sorted out, you'll get your eye candy.

What I'd like to know, though, is where the trackers and their add/remove feature has gone.

But one has to admit, it must be coded well, given the file size.

Other torrent apps are much bigger and have less features.

Some even require a JVM

But then again, Java runs everywhere - uTorrent doesn't. (yet)

There's uTorrent for OS X, which is essentially BSD, but no version for *Nix - Why ?.

Please make my day and port your Aqua code to EFL, QT or GTK.

It's not that hard - send me the source and I'll do it for you.

@XxP2P25xX

There are torrent sites that offer streaming.

The old Empornium.us did that. MayItRestInPeace

You could watch what you are downloading and then decide if it was actually worth it.

The site has to support it.

If it doesn't, there's always VLC and Xine.

They can play partially downloaded files and just skip missing parts.

A feature well known to aMule / eMule users.

You can re-add the trackers tab and any other tabs by just right clicking.

Hey, guy. Let me tell you: I don't like new things. I'm the kind of guy who, if there's a major change to a program he really likes and uses all the time, opens an account on the forums just to say he wishes they'd change it back. Hell, I think I've done it here. I don't make any apologies for that, I just wanted to give you some perspective when I say: I like this new thing.

I wasn't sure at first, but once I figured out I could bring back [and remove] tabs, once I really started looking at everything it could do, I gotta tell you: I'm pretty happy. Streaming via sequential piece downloads is something I've been wondering for years why no one does; I get that there are concerns about what that does to availability, but file-level prioritization has been done for years without significant harm. There's a lot that can be done with algorithms to optimize this feature, too; looking forward to seeing what comes of this.

Anyway, this is my long-winded way of saying: good on you. If this is the first beta, I can't imagine what the final release will be like.

@ Kestral71 - It's a minimalist's client. It is supposed to small and quick. Adding bloated and flashy UIs is rather against this idea. That having been said, the UI is pretty damn good.

@ XxP2P25xX - Check your stream options, it allows streaming to a bunch of different clients. It worked for me with VLC, so I am going to suggest user error at this point and stop searching for the black box.

@ Firon - I think that may be something worth letting people know on a grander scale. I have been using the Alpha for months and was a little confused when the tabs all disappeared, I expect a lot of your users will be if you don't let them know.

Overall I think this new client is very nice.

I'm impressed with being able to leave it downloading all day on my media server, and having it auto throttle when it detects network activity. This means I can torrent all day without pissing off my family.

I also like the remote webUI. I must admit I hate the apps and think it was a silly idea, but I used to hate Cherry Coke as well >.>

We shall see, either way congrats to Firon et all for the progression from Alpha to Beta :)

Hello, guys. A few issues with the latest 3.0 beta 25220.

1) The RSS Feeds list is not expanded the next time I restart μTorrent. (also reported above by thebign)

2) The /MINIMIZED switch does not work anymore.

3) The Options page keeps opening in the Remote tab and doesn't remember the previous tab like it did in the previous versions.

4) It would be nice if we could move the tabs around, for example the Files tab so that it's like it was in the previous versions.

5) The help file needs to be updated with the new advanced options.

EDIT: About #2, it seems the switch is removed from the registry but if I manually run utorrent /minimized it starts minimized. So something is broken here.

Is there any option to show detailed info at the "added on" column?

I mean like before, with the exact date and hour and not this "over a year ago" etc

edit

and is it possible to change the line spacing? Even on full hd monitor i need to scroll too much compared to the old version...

@ravna, @articuno1au:

I'm all for minimalist UI - I hate busy UI more than even this dog's dinner. I used the word 'hideous' instead of the word I wanted to use which is, 'vomitous'.

What I truly despise is the general design of the icons; the large square blocky look and feel with truly awful colour choices make an otherwise excellent piece of software look like something someone put together with icons drawn in MSPaint. Someone needs to teach the devs how to create minimalist UI and/or they need to provide a way to COMPLETELY reskin the app so that all trace of the current ugliness can be removed by third party skins.

I really do find the current UI so offensive that I've been using other torrent clients. One just has to check the forums to find that I'm not alone - the outcry against this UI was immediate and intense when it was first introduced months ago.

Any chance you're going to hire someone with half a clue about designing the look and feel of a UI? The design and colour of this UI is hideous.

My understanding is that they have already hired UI designers, and that 3.0 is the results of their work. Believe it or not, the iconset in this beta, is better than the icons in the alphas for the past few weeks.

I had also cpu spikes in the task manager. Running on win XP sp3 with all updates installed and with almost no up- or downloads. This spikes caused the cpu driver to exit the energy saving scheme and every 2-3 seconds to run the cpu at full speed. Annoying .

So i downgraded to 2.2.1 sorry :P

Can you return the status icons from "#" column back to the "Name" column?

In the "#" column they look awful (not helpful) and act weird.

Here how it was (icon is next to the name):

275q.png

You get all the needed information from the first look:

"yep, i'm uploading "blocSonic_com" and downloading "Brett Koonce")

And here how it is now:

269o.png

And it is not only inconvenient and unhelpful, but it is not tested enough - it behaves weird, when you press F2 to rename the torrent:

1) Press F2 (uTorrent shows the renaming field in the "#" column as if you would try to change the position of the torrent in the queue, which is nonsense):

270b.png

2) Enter some text - it displays still in the Number column :-)

272r.png

3) At least the text entered in the Number column goes to the Name column after clicking Enter:

273o.png

The DL icon in the number column is uncomfortable and the column itself is buggy. It would be nice if you return back the previous behavior (when the DL icon was shown in the Name column next to the name of the torrent and when pressing F2 provoked renaming the real name column, instead of showing the rename field in the number column)

The DL icon logically refers to the Name of the torrent, not to it's number in the queue:

- What am i downloading or uploading?

- Oh, yes, this or that torrent.
